Caribbean Leaders Call Obama “breath of fresh air”

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has described pronouncements made by United States President Barack Obama at the 5th Summit of the Americas in Trinidad as “a breath of fresh air”.

Skerrit has noted a positive tone from Obama and according to him, the meeting has so far gone beyond the expectations of regional heads.

A pledge of 30 million dollars to strengthen security in the region is among pronouncements made by Obama, which Skerrit says has been welcomed by Caricom member states.

The Dominica leader said Obama has also spoken to the issue of Cuba’s absence from the Summit and the removal of the U.S embargo on Cuba.

Skerrit said: “While the declaration in itself doesn’t necessarily speak to serious concrete action to be taken to address some of the challenges confronting us, the pronouncements from President Barack Obama in respect to the Caribbean and Latin America, it’s been a breath of fresh air and we have to welcome that;

positive steps by him in respect to Cuba; it is what we’re looking for and what we’ve been calling for.”

Skerrit added: “All these are positive signs from President Obama and this is the kind of meaningful and practical change which we’ve been talking about, and were very satisfied with the positive change as small as they may be.”
