Frank Rich had an interesting column in The New York Times Sunday in which he scoffs at the idea that women of a certain age who favoured Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries would shift to John McCain in November: “..the notion that all female Clinton supporters became 'angry white women' once their candidate lost — to the hysterical extreme where even lifelong Democrats would desert their own party en masse — is… a sexist stereotype.” He goes on to say that it’s not the Democrats who... Life of Pi is a story about an Indian boy's adventures. The first part of this book deals extensively with religion and is actually pretty dull. It is strange, because the rest of the book does not seem to need the first part of the book at all. The editor, if there was one, could have left this on the cutting room floor. I was really turned off after the first hour or so of Life of Pi....I only continued to listen because it was the only audiobook I currently had. Life of Pi then shifted... Read Full Story

On October 14, Canadians gave our Conservative government a fresh mandate to continue with our plan to take action on the economy.
We are injecting billions of stimulus in the Canadian economy by cutting taxes, investing in infrastructure and strengthening the banking system. Our first concern is to protect peoples’ jobs and savings, but the Opposition parties are interested only in power and entitlements.
The Liberals, NDP and Bloc want to use your tax dollars to pay for political... Read Full Story
Our Prime Minister has a reputation for being a good family man, so it’s not surprising that the books Yann Martel sent him December 24 are good ones to read to children. Martel has been giving books to Harper every two weeks since last spring, as a part of a campaign to encourage the PM to find some "tranquility" at the end of the day by reading. The latest, holiday shipment is the 19th in the series. So far Martel has received one acknowledgement—for the first book, The Death of Ivan... Read Full Story
Stephen Harper is playing chicken again, and this time the other guys might not blink. Most Canadian voters did not vote for the Conservatives six weeks ago in the federal general election. so there is no reason for Stephen Harper to govern as if they had a majority. The budget update that Jim Flaherty delivered yesterday was appalling on many counts, not least because it assumes that since nobody wants another election at this point, they have a free hand to follow their economic ideology... It never ceases to amaze me that Canada never gets any news coverage. I scoured CNN, The Huffington Post, and the New York Times. You would think that a borderline fascist takeover of the government would make news, but apparently not (at least outside of Canadian news sites anyway). The story is this. Right around the same time that America held it's election so did we. At the time Canadian voters reinstated a Conservative government. Now, only 8 or so weeks after the election, the leaders... Yes, it has been busy chez nous , and I missed commenting on the anniversary of Yann Martel’s campaign to provide Prime Minister Stephen Harper with reading material. You’ll remember that last spring Martel participated in a ceremony for the Canada Council for the Arts at which Harper appeared very harried. Martel started sending a short book every two weeks in order to give Harper some good bedtime reading and a few moments of “stillness” at the end of the day. A year later, Martel has...
