Strung out over and beneath the surface of Alaska from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, the trans-Alaska pipeline, at 34 years old, is now on its second lifetime. The four-foot in diameter, half-inch-thick steel pipe had an original design lifespan of 30 years.

This is the nation's largest oil field, and the starting point of the Alaskan Pipeline, which starts in Prudhoe bay and terminates in Valdez, Alaska. Exxon is the largest owner with a 22% share of the reserves at Prudhoe Bay. BP and ARCO also have major stakes. Prudhoe bay is 400 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska.
