The LA Business Journal printed a letter I wrote commenting on a reported study about how to reduce traffic problems in LA. The text as it ran in the March 2 edition is as follows: "If we really want to reduce traffic, we should all figure out ways to drive less. by Daniel Walsh Author of Our Sunday "History & Reflections" Series A favorite memory from my distant youth was the rides on the streetcars that ran near my home. When I stared up at the passing trees and lampposts, I thought the trees were moving—not the streetcar. My family did not have an automobile. The city credits this to an increase in subway and bus ridership, encouraged by service improvements and a drop in crime during that period. The New York Times has the full story here . Anyone who rides NYC public transport knows there is still a lot of work to be done. (The New York City Straphangers Campaign reports that subway breakdowns are up in 2008 compared to 2007 levels.) But the fact that ... Read Full Story

Wired , Forbes , and the Telegraph have all reported on the Speed Vest , recently introduced by DIY inventors Brady Clark and Mykle Hansen. The vest, which displays a bike rider's speed in large illuminated numerals on the back, is designed to make others aware that bicycling is a fast, efficient way of getting around. "Have you ever outpaced cars and been honked at? Had a car almost wipe you out while making a turn?" the inventors write. "The Speed Vest was invented because we were curious to know if putting more information in front of drivers might change their awareness of bicyclists. ... Read Full Story
