Located in the northwest of India, the Punjab region has the distinction of being one of the earliest "cradles of civilization" with a 4000-year history. Bordering Pakistan and Kashmir, and near the foot of the Himalayas, the region contains the Indus Valley, site of many archaeological excavations. It is also the homeland of the well-known, 2500 year-old Hindu text known as the Mahabharata. Living in this region with a large sikh population, Punjabi men are likely to be seen wearing a turban. Industrious and relatively liberal minded, the urban centers in the region -- Amritsar, Batala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala, Ferozepur, Bathinda, Mandi Gobindgarh and Rajpura -- are growing quickly, though thanks to fertile land and its many rivers, much of the Punjab is still agrarian.
