On Monday vets in the Netherlands are beginning the cull of thousands of pregnant goats and sheep on farms where Q fever has been confirmed. The animals, both healthy and infected ones, are being killed to prevent the release of the Q fever bacteria during delivery or spontaneous abortions. An estimated 15 to 20,000 goats and sheep in the Netherlands are to be slaughtered in connection with Q-fever. Minister of Health Ab Klink and Minister of Agriculture Gerda Verburg have agreed that on infected farms where animals have not been vaccinated, all pregnant animals must be slaughtered, whether or not they have the virus.

The spread of the animal-borne disease Q-fever among the Dutch population is calling for drastic measures, according to an advice issued by a group of experts. The experts are recommending wholesale slaughter of pregnant goats on farms where the disease has been confirmed. The bacteria is spread during the premature birth of dairy goats. Q-fever is found in both animals and humans. In humans it causes flu like symptoms and can lead to pneumonia.
