There are lots of places where you can see professors' lecture notes, but nothing exists like the many business-oriented online degree programs. The blogger known as GeoCastAway pointed me to MIT's extensive Open Courseware offerings, which include dozens of courses from the Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences department. While most of them, again, are lecture notes and...

Since more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by seawater, detailed studies of the oceans were of great importance to science as well as to practical navigation. The first modern text devoted exclusively to marine science was Histoire physique de la mer (1725) by the Italian military man and naturalist Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli (1658-1730), who assembled information about water temperature, salinity, currents, ocean plants and...

"New York City is primarily composed of sediments that were metamorphosed during the Taconic and Acadian orogenies roughly 500 - 400 million years ago. Garnets can be found in the rocks of the Hartland Formation and Manhattan Schist (view a NYC rock sample). It is in these hard rocks that the city skyscrapers have their foundations."
