When Phil Spector, the legendary "wall of sound" record producer, was convicted in 2009 for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, his guilt was left largely unquestioned. After all, while Spector produced everyone from the Beatles to the Ramones, he threatened both of those bands with firearms. Phil Spector's Wife, Rachelle Short, Speaks Out for First Time Since Trial
Phil Spector's pretty, young and tough blonde wife, Rachelle Short, spoke to the press for the first time since Spector was sent to prison, defending herself and her man in an interview with the LA Times.
Short has been under a lot of scrutiny. That's because she married Spector in 2006, after he had already been charged with the murder of Lana Clarkson. That, Spector's amassed fortune as the creator of the "Wall of Sound" production technique, and the couple's incredible age difference (he's 69, she's 28) have lead to widespread use of the term "gold digger." Big surprise right?
Spector's guilty verdit: "That man couldn't hurt a fly." And, "I don't believe any of it."
All the gold digger comments: "Younger woman, older man, gold digger, whatever. I don't take anything from my husband, and I never have. I'm a good person, but people don't see any of that or know how hard I work."
And just for the gross-out factor: "We had sex. We were doing it all the time."
Short, who says she can "weed whack. Rip out walls," and "lay tile," says she wept at Spector's sentencing because she couldn't imagine the fragile producer surviving in prison.
She's also, to put it mildly, a little callous when it comes to Clarkson's death. Short and Spector were married in the same foyer where Clarkson died. If you agree with the prosecutors and the jury, that's where Spector shot her in the head. If you're like Short, you believe she sat in a chair (that's still there) and shot herself. Either way it's gruesome. So what's Short's take?
When asked by Times writer Harriet Ryan why she chose to get married in the fateful foyer, she said, "Why wouldn't I?" adding, "I sit in that chair all the time."
