** No regrets if Govt falls: Rahul
CNN-IBN
New Delhi: In a strongly worded endorsement of the Indo-US nuclear deal, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he won't regret if the Government fell trying to get the deal through.
Speaking to the media in Amethi, the constituency he represents in the Lok Sabha, Rahul called the deal exceptional and said it had struck a chord with the youth across party lines.
“I will have no regrets if the Government falls as the deal is good for the country. People thinking about the growth are in favour of deal. Every youth has recognised this deal. This will create more jobs,” Rahul said.
The Gandhi scion also said that those who are pro-growth and pro-development are backing this deal. He reiterated his support to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and hailed him as a good leader.
Describing the nuclear deal as fundamental to India's energy problems and one, which can make the country a global player, he said, "I also believe that you need guts to do it. I appreciate it. I would tell him (PM) to take the risk again, again and again. That is leadership."
"When you are convinced that it is in the interest of the people of the country, numbers don't matter. This decision that the Prime Minister has taken, in my view, is the right decision. We are going to win the vote," Rahul added.
However, Rahul was soft on the Left parties, saying the UPA's former allies probably withdrew support due to ideological reasons.
Reacting to Rahul’s statements BJP Spokesperson Rajeev Pratap Rudy said, “Rahul Gandhi should stop day dreaming and it is advisable that he comes out and name the members of Parliament who he claims are supporting the N-deal.”
