Though she was introduced through the movie 'Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat' (1996), Rani was noted in 'Ghulam', and her film 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' shot her onto overnight stardom. A cousin to Kajol and daughter of director Ram Mukherjee, Rani had made a name for herself in the industry through sheer hard work.
