See We Can All Just Get Along

We told you last week that Carrie Underwood prefers to be called contemporary instead of “pop-country”. I just ran across more from this interview and I have to say bravo! This is EXACTLY how I feel about the different “genres” of country music.
Pop-country has made superstars out of acts like Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift and more, but the term is not particularly endearing in Nashville, even to the artists who have come to define it.
“I hate saying pop-country – I hate using that,” Carrie Underwood says.
Underwood, who has sold more than 10 million albums with hits that appeal to both the MTV and CMT set, prefers to describe such music as “contemporary.”
“I’ve had people tell me, ‘I never listened to country music until I saw you on “American Idol,” and now I’ve been to a Rascal Flatts concert, and I went and saw so and so,’ ” the 26-year-old Oklahoma native says.
“And it’s wonderful that we all kind of have our place in country music and we all pull listeners in for different reasons, and because of that we can hear everything.”
Having such an array of artists to fill country music shows the world that country music is full of amazing talent, musicians and that we can, in fact, stand firmly on our own. Having artists like Carrie, Rascal Flatts and Taylor in our genre help bring those people with a “stereotype” of country music in our world and share with them both the traditional and non-traditional music. What’s so wrong with that?
