MahJong Room, Surry Hills
MGS has wanted to visit this place for a while.
Not because she particularly likes MahJong, although she has played a game or two in her time, but because the name has a funky ring to it, the rooms have some rather funky decor and the food has a reputation.
So on Saturday night, she went.
It was a party of 5. MGS and her crew sat upstairs. If you go, request a seat there; the room is slightly sassier, the ambiance slightly more sophisticated. Just don't slip on your way back down!
Our waiter was a friendly, funky fellow with a trippin' hairdo to match... he was good with recommendations and suggestions as to how many plates to order.
The food is mostly Cantonese fare. It's good food but, on the whole, MGS thought not blow you away food... MGS found the Blue swimmer Crab Gow Gee a tad dry despite the accompanying supply of red vinegar and ginger dipping sauce and the special Soft Shell Crab San Choi Bao, while tasty, couldn't compete with memories of the general scrumtiousness of similar dishes made with minced meat...

But the Peking Duck was tasty and the Crispy San Dong chicken in vinegar sauce a sensation. Light, moist, slightly sour, slightly sweet, slightly oniony... best dish of the night.

On our waiter's recommendation we also tried the Black Pepper Scotch Fillet with Mushroom and Red Onion. That was pretty awesome too, tender meat, great peppery flavour.
MGS would go back to MahJong Room, but more for the ambiance and the general funkiness of the place than the food.... but then, there's plenty more to try on the menu...
MahJong Room does Mahjong sessions on the second Saturday of every month. For $36 per head teams of 4 can while away the afternoon behind Mahjong tiles, sampling Cantonese treats between turns. Sounds pretty good to MGS, she might give it a try. MGS.
