The best dumplings???
Not long ago MGS posted that the best dumpling house in Sydney was Sea Bay on Pitt St... she stands by that, but several MGS readers suggested Yee King Fresh Handmade Noodles on Sussex St in Chinatown as an alternative venue.
MGS visited this past Tuesday and was dearly please with this tiny box of a restaurant... about 10 tables in total although a set of stairs suggested potentially more seating elsewhere on the premises.
The menu was pleasingly BeiJing style: plates of thick noodles with lamb and tomato, spicy dan dan noodle soup, onion cakes, and northern-style sweet and sour which is authentically brown, (from the black vinegar) not orange in colour.
Tsing Tao beer is on the drinks list although you'll have to BYO wine. As for the dumplings... MGS ordered some pork, prawn and bok choi specials. They came boiled, but MGS had to request chili - a condiment that comes without question at Sea Bay. MGS also had to request a dipping bowl for her vinegar-soy-chili dipping sauce, and, meanwhile, those dumplings were cooling...
The verdict? These dumplings were smaller and less full of flavour than those at Sea Bay... for MGS, a sensational dumpling should explode in the mouth with colour, moisture, heat, and flavour... these dumplings were small, warm, comforting parcels -good, yes, but MGS has had better.
Still, for a change, and for a plate of authentic Northern sweet and sour... this place is a goer. It's cheap, it's cheerful and it's only a short walk from the cinema so good for a pre-cheap Tuesday movie-night feed!
