Ways to Reuse Eggshells updated Wed Feb 18 2009 7:31 pm CST

I recycle, reuse and repurpose as much as I can to prevent things going to landfills and for economics also. There are many uses for eggshells some are industrial and some you can do at home. Eggshells are composed of around 95% calcium carbonate, a mineral that is very important for industry, nutrition and agriculture. There are many studies trying to find new ways to utilize this resource Powdered eggshells are used in animal feed, there are nutritional supplements that are composed of this mineral. Historically eggshells have been used by some artists in the recipe for white pigment. Instead of lime for crops crushed eggshells have been used instead. Artistic use of eggshells are many. Mosaics, carving, painting, decoupage and washi eggs to name a few. Crushed or powdered eggshells can be put into a compost bin also they need to be crushed or powdered in order to break down easier.

There are some people with egg allergies. It usually starts when they are infants and most outgrow it. Others do not and will have the allergy at different levels of severity lifelong. The allergy is mostly a protein allergy and is usually the whites and sometimes the yolk. Some manufacturers of eggshell supplements say there is little danger because the protein is not in a properly treated shell. But of course you can get your calcium from other sources. But if you are doing non edible things still be aware of the dangers.

When using animal products proper care has to be used. When I was young, raw eggs were used in different foods like egg nog, egg cream and tonics. We frown upon that because of the problem with salmonella in raw eggs. Industries pasteurize and otherwise clean eggshells before use to neutralize the bacteria. If you plan on recycling at home you need to be mindful of proper handling. Soaking the shells in hot soap and water. When we handle raw chicken we are told to wash utensils and cutting board with soap and water. It is suggested that a small amount of bleach be added to hot water and soak the shells in that then let them dry. One amount mentioned was approximately one tsp to a quart of hot water then rinse and let dry. Others say they always boil the eggshells. The problem with boiling is what happens to the calcium content if you are utilizing it for that.

If you are carving eggshells it is prudent to wear a particulate mask or respirator. Particulates can be breathed in and cause lung damage. This does not only apply to eggshells it applies to chalk dust, wood dust, spackle. etc. I go crazy when I see the home shows on television and watch them working without masks.

Depending on what paints you use, also, if it has fumes wear a mask and either work outdoors or by an open window for circulation.
