A Wikizine for all those interested in being pro-active with regard to climate change and how we can best tackle it. Initiated with an article suggesting that the way forward is for us all to take individual responsibility and bring about change from the ground up.

For those readers that still doubt the reality of rising sea levels, etc, a visit to the site at http://www.starr.tv/ should be illuminating - the first islands where sea levels are forcing evacuation are the subject of a documentary.

Recent reports on biofuels vary somewhat. Switchgrass may have performed better than expected, but criticism of other crops being subsidised by governments arises from consideration of their downsides - a new link was added to lead to the details.

This summer the Camp for Climate Action will pitch its tents outside the Kingsnorth coal-fired power station in Kent for a week of education, sustainable living and direct action. There is an open invitation to all to the camp, which is now part of an international movement, with eight climate camps on four continents planned for this summer. The aim is to show that the blind pursuit of economic growth at any cost is unsustainable, and is contributing to the CO2 emissions and other ecosystem problems that are causing catastrophic climate change. The website is found at http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/ - also listed in the links section.

There are now well over 40 useful links here to sites with detailed resources, reports and explanations. Please read and take part - spread the word around the world to help engage everyone in the battle to preserve our environment for future generations, not forgetting the wildlife that will suffer if we fail.

The Wind Howled - (c) Rhumour June 8th 2009 And the wind howled To mark the time The rain also cried When the last man died Polar caps had long since melted away Sea levels had grown higher every day Small hills now each an island state All because we left it too late For actions delayed by accountancy rules Had come too late for those in our schools To ever live a life like those before them Victims of denial by far too many men Awake I now recalled this dream And hope we will avoid this scene One that man might come ... A meeting of experts convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Madrid agreed today to a research agenda to develop an evidence-based framework for action on the human health implications of climate change. The plan builds on a comprehensive review of what is already known about health risks from climate change. It was developed by WHO with more than 80 top researchers on climate change and health along with representatives of donor and other UN agencies. The meeting took place 6-8 October and hosted by the Ministry of Health of Spain. “Many agencies, including WHO, have highlighted the health dangers of climate change” ... Read Full Story

The main source of pre-industrial revolution atmospheric methane was the evolving of methane gas from wetlands. According to ice core data, methane concentrations have not exceeded approximately 700 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) for at least 650, 000 years (Spahni et al., 2005) . (See figure below.) Before the industrial revolution, the geographic extent of methane production was commonly directly proportional to the geographic extent of temperate wetlands. During the last glaciation for example, global atmospheric methane concentration was very low (~400 ppbv) during the coldest parts of the glacial period, and increased when temperatures increased. Methane concentration was largely proportional to the ... Read Full Story

Trees are too sparse........ by Rhumour  updated October 2009 It's no secret that de-forestation in South America and elsewhere to make way for agriculture, bio-fuel crops and drug cultivation has deprived the world of a substantial proprtion of it's 'lungs'. The act of clearing woodlands creates many problems - soil erosion, air pollution from torching the ground, loss of habitat for many species of flora and fauna, and the long term decline in the capacity of the forests to absorb CO2 and release oxygen. Political and criminal activites have a lot to answer for in this regard, but are compounded by population growth creating ... Read Full Story

Substantially based upon Al Gore’s suggestions from An Inconvenient Truth, but with changes relevant to the UK. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb(cfl). CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Turn your thermostat down 2° in winter If it's safe to do so (I wouldnt recommend this for elderly folk), pop on a jumper or other favourite item of warm clothing and save money. If you have air conditioning turn it up by 2° in the summer. Almost half of the energy we ... Read Full Story

Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing. The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years. Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level. The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade. At least 279 species of plants and animals are ... Read Full Story

Kolkata, Dec 21 (IANS) Tata Steel will cut down its carbon dioxide emissions from the current level of two tonnes to 1.8 tonnes for every tonne of steel produced by 2012, a senior company official said Monday. “Our carbon dioxide emissions are already below the global industry average of 2.2 tonnes per tonne of steel. But [...]

Washington, December 21 (ANI): A new study led by Yale University geologists has suggested that the kinds of increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) taking place today could have a significantly larger effect on global temperatures than previously thought. The team demonstrated that only a relatively small rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) was associated with [...]

Researchers studying climate change during the early Pliocene have concluded that slow changes such as melting ice sheets amplified the initial warming caused by greenhouse gases, and that a relatively small rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels wasassociated with substantial global warming about 4.5 million years ago.  The findings are published in the journal Nature Geoscience. read more

In a move to burnish the record of President Obama before he goes to the Copenhagen Global Warming Conference, the EPA declared that CO2, as well as some other "greenhouse" gases, are "dangerous." While the Competitive Enterprise Institute and others are suing to stop this,  this finding may be instituted in the meantime.  This allows the EPA to control the extent to which you emit CO2, methane-

Delegations from 192 countries will arrive in the city of Copenhagen on Monday for two weeks of talks aimed at establishing a new global treaty on climate change. The majority of governments now agree with the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that global warming is man-made and rising temperatures are a threat to mankind. There are, however, some sceptical voices, including that of the Czech president Václav Klaus. So...
