The name John Hus is not well known to many modern day non-Reformed Protestants but perhaps we can think of Hus as the proto-type Martin Luther.  Indeed, much of the situation was the same with Hus as it would be with Luther except the catalyst for Hus seemed to be the turmoil being caused by men who were competing to claim the office of Pope.  Hus, the master of Charles University in Prague Czechoslovakia  at first attempted to remain neutral in the fight but as time went on it was looking more & more like the entire papal system & perhaps Roman Catholicism itself ... Looks like we missed a great evening on Saturday. When Lee and I were out walking early Sunday we noticed the posters for Boredom is Counter Revolutionary which took place the night before. Obviously it was aimed at a crowd considerably younger than we are—several bands with edgy names were listed as talent--but I loved the name. When I got home I did some roaming on the net and came up with the information that the evening was the launch of the tenth issue of an avant garde arts magazine , Four Minutes to Midnight . The new issue, the website says, “explores the ... Read Full Story

This is a continuation of my review of Peter Gelderloos' 2007 book, How Nonviolence Protects the State (see Part 1 and Part 2 ). I have chosen to devote considerable space to a critical review of this work not because it represents a formidable challenge to nonviolence in itself, but because it appears to collect under one title many of the grievances and frustrations of militant activists toward those who advocate nonviolent tactics. To the extent that Gelderloos captures these concerns and articulates their rationale, this review aims to clarify misunderstandings, and show a way forward that avoids the pitfalls Gelderloos mistakenly ascribes to ... Here I continue my review of Barbara Epstein's book Political Protest & Cultural Revolution (see part 1 and part 2 ) with consideration of one final issue that faced the organizations Epstein examines in the book: the consensus process. The consensus process was used in the three movements she chronicles, the Clamshell and Abalone Alliances and the Livermore Action Group (LAG), with varying degrees of success. By now, consensus has become a fairly divisive issue in radical movements. As Epstein shows, it can be abused; there are inequalities of power that naturally arise in this, like any other, process; and it requires an enormous ... Read Full Story

With green blankets covering the buildings and cranes looming darkly overhead, Britain's commercial building boom doesn't seem to be much affected by the economic slump. As other industries cut back, the commercial building industry is not doing so, which is resulting in a noticeable shortage of workers to meet the demands of British construction companies.by TalPotishman With green blankets covering the buildings and cranes looming darkly overhead, Britain's commercial building boo [...] Read Full Story

Children have been banned from flying kites in a playground because of fears that they could get them tangled up in overhead telephone cables. The ban was imposed after a safety inspection at the park, in the village of Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said that a child could be tempted to climb the telegraph pole to free a trapped kite. Stefan Piwowarski, chairman of the parish council, said: “We...

Still from The Kite Runner One 12-year-old was recently the victim of some kite fighting leftovers. The "sport," made famous in The Kite Runner, is popular in Flushing Meadows Corona Park — and now the city is on the receiving end of a lawsuit over it. The Queens boy was skateboarding outside of his apartment last month when he was clotheslined by a razor-sharp wire that had allegedly fallen from a kite fight. The NY Post reports that...

Two kite surfers from West Sussex took advantage of strong winds on the south coast to realise an ambition to jump over Worthing pier. Jake Scrace, 25, and Lewis Crathern, 24, had been planning Monday morning's jump for three years but had to wait for perfect weather conditions. They took off from Goring to the west of Worthing in gusts of wind that were more than 40mph. Mr Scrace described the build up to the jump as "terrifying". Carpenter...
