By Lisa Miller Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church and author of the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life , drew fire last year when he was invited to give the invocation at President Obama’s inauguration. His support for Proposition 8 in California, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman only, and his anti-gay-marriage views concerned many in Obama’s base. Now Warren’s on the defensive again, this time for his affiliation with Martin Ssempa, a Ugandan pastor who has endorsed proposed legislation in Uganda that makes certain homosexual acts punishable by life in prison or even, in some cases, death. Ssempa ... Read Full Story

A joint publishing venture between influential pastor Rick Warren and Reader's Digest magazine has collapsed less than a year after it was announced with great fanfare. The multimedia project, called the Purpose Driven Connection, will continue in a different form but be operated solely by Warren's Saddleback Church starting next spring, church officials said Wednesday. A quarterly print magazine will cease publication in mid-November and its content will migrate to a free, expanded Web site, Warren says. He cited lagging subscriptions. In August, Reader's Digest Association Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, facing dropping print subscriptions and looming debt. Requests were comment from ... Read Full Story

Jeffery L. Sheler, religion correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, has written a biography of Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren in Prophet of Purpose: The Life of Rick Warren. The most interesting revelation in the biography may well be that Warren’s “traditional” marriage was actually an “arranged” marriage of sorts: Perhaps one of the most [...]

Saddleback Church Pastor and Barack Obama Inauguration Invocation Giver Rick "The Purpose Driven Life" Warren is very good friends—best buddies—with Martin Ssempa, the Ugandan pastor and raving anti-gay bigot pushing legislation in that country that would make gay sex a death-penalty offense, require Ugandans to report anyone they suspect of homosexual activity or risk three years in prison, and put gay people with HIV to death. Rick Warren is once again in PR-speak mode when faced with his ties to the most barbaric elements in regressive Christianity. As I've written before, Warren has long had close ties to Martin Ssempa, an absolutely crazed anti-gay paster from Uganda who is one of the primary forces behind the push to make homosexuality even more illegal in that country than it already is (along with punishing anyone who advocates for gay rights as well). Now...

Andrew highlights the vicious homophobia of Pastor Rick Warren's main ally in Uganda, a minister named Thomas Ssempa who burns condoms and seems ready to burn gays as well. I know Rick Warren fairly well, and though we disagree on some issues, he's a good man who does good deeds across the planet, and it seems that he should be teaching Ssempa the error of his ways. I've e-mailed Rick to see what he has to say about Ssempa's homophobia.
