Rick Warren and Seeker Sensitive
Cautions on Rick Warrens New Purpose Driven Religion and all things Seeker Sensitive
Jeffery L. Sheler, religion correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, has written a biography of Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren in Prophet of Purpose: The Life of Rick Warren. The most interesting revelation in the biography may well be that Warren’s “traditional” marriage was actually an “arranged” marriage of sorts:
Perhaps one of the most [...]

Saddleback Church Pastor and Barack Obama Inauguration Invocation Giver Rick "The Purpose Driven Life" Warren is very good friends—best buddies—with Martin Ssempa, the Ugandan pastor and raving anti-gay bigot pushing legislation in that country that would make gay sex a death-penalty offense, require Ugandans to report anyone they suspect of homosexual activity or risk three years in prison, and put gay people with HIV to death. When Newsweek...

BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARYby Bill BerkowitzWhy doesn't Rick Warren -- the mega-church pastor, the best-selling author, the man who hangs out with world leaders, and who has an opinion on just about everything -- condemn the horrific anti-gay legislation pending in Uganda? Anyone that has followed the career of Pastor Rick Warren knows that he is a very busy man. The founder of the Lake Forest, California-based Saddleback Church has things to...

Homophobic fat-butt Mr. Pastor Rick Warren likes to do one thing and that is to lie. He’s a lot like that other guy, Lanny Davis: they both cultivate images of themselves as non-partisan peacebrokers, but when you point out that they’re really just self-centered establishment whores looking out for their own professional interests at all [...]

Rick Warren is once again in PR-speak mode when faced with his ties to the most barbaric elements in regressive Christianity. As I've written before, Warren has long had close ties to Martin Ssempa, an absolutely crazed anti-gay paster from Uganda who is one of the primary forces behind the push to make homosexuality even more illegal in that country than it already is (along with punishing anyone who advocates for gay rights as well).

Andrew highlights the vicious homophobia of Pastor Rick Warren's main ally in Uganda, a minister named Thomas Ssempa who burns condoms and seems ready to burn gays as well. I know Rick Warren fairly well, and though we disagree on some issues, he's a good man who does good deeds across the planet, and it seems that he should be teaching Ssempa the error of his ways. I've e-mailed Rick to see what he has to say about Ssempa's homophobia.
