Here you'll find the wikizine for Roald Dahl whose influence on the childhood fantasies of Gen-Xers makes him almost the Gen-X Dr. Seuss. Except Dahl is more grim, like the Brothers Grimm – and his stories are full of bonecrunching and child-eating and disposing of bad children down garbage chutes. Among his 19 children's books are The BFG, which became an animated film and has recently been produced as a play, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which, in addition to a play version, was adapted for two films -- the 1971 version starring Gene Wilder as the eccentric factory owner Willy Wonka and the 2005 version with Johnny Depp playing the role.

Born in Wales in 1916, Dahl loved to play with the sounds of language like his fellow countryman Dylan Thomas. Where Thomas created poetry, Dahl used his quirky ear to create vocabulary, words like gobstoppers, fleshlumpeaters and oompa-loompas.

As a WWII pilot, Dahl had his adventures and had probably seen the underbelly of the civilized world, as his books suggest. If you're looking for some kid reading, hold the syrup, then creative and funny Dahl might be right for your library.

"Fantastic Mr. Fox" is a magical mixing of two distinctly ingenius sensibilities. Marry the dark "scare the little darlings" playfulness of children's novelist Roald Dahl to the quirky, comic warmth of filmmaker Wes Anderson, assign it to ever-so-patient British masters of stop-motion animation and what you get is a movie of whimsy, wit, warmth and wackiness, a Dahl parable ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory") brought to animated life. The...

Earlier today I participated in a roundtable interview with Ronald Dahl’s daughter, Lucy Dahl, for the movie “Fantastic Mr. Fox”.  Since so many of Dahl’s books have not been made into movies, we asked his daughter if she’s heard about any progress in bringing them to life.   The main thing she told us was…many people [...]

From October 1972 to October 1973 a controversy over Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory simmered in the pages of The Horn Book. It began with an article, "McLuhan, Youth, and Literature", by Eleanor Cameron, author of the Mushroom Planet series for children and of The Green and Burning Tree: On the Writing and Enjoyment of Children's Books. Spread out over the October, December, and February issues, it tied the ideas of Marshall...
