Ducks, Scott Niedermayer talks continue

Contract talks between the Ducks and Vancouver-based player agent Kevin Epp, who represents defenseman Scott Niedermayer, were ongoing Tuesday night but an announcement on a potential new deal was not expected until at least Wednesday.

Niedermayer, who stands to become an unrestricted free agent at 9 a.m. Wednesday, had contemplated retirement for a third consecutive off-season before notifying the Ducks on Friday that he plans to return for another NHL season.

During a subsequent telephone interview Friday, Niedermayer said that he expected things to “work out” with the Ducks and that he did not anticipate entertaining potential offers from other teams.

Niedermayer’s younger brother, right wing Rob Niedermayer, also stands to become unrestricted Wednesday. While the two have greatly enjoyed being teammates with the Ducks the past four seasons, including helping the club to a Stanley Cup championship in 2007, they are not necessarily married to the idea of remaining with the same club, Scott Niedermayer said.

Ducks general manager Bob Murray has said that he expects Rob Niedermayer to test the free-agent market. Were Rob Niedermayer to return to the Ducks, it would probably require a pay cut from the $2 million he earned each of the past four seasons.
