“Avatar” earned $23.5 million on Friday :- British director Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” set a Christmas Day sales record at the box office in North America, taking a narrow lead over last weekend’s champ, “Avatar,” according to early estimates.
“Sherlock Holmes,” earned $24.9 million during its first day of release while “Avatar” earned $23.5 million on Friday. The record for a Christmas Day opening was set last year when “Marley and Me” launched with $14.4 million.

Madonna, Lola, Rocco and David in Malawi Madonna was photographed touring the school she funded in Malawi. Pop star Madonna had Lola, 12, eight-year-old Rocco, and David, three, with her for company. Meanwhile, Madonna, 50, is reportedly attempting to adopt four-year-old Mercy James as a sister for David, who was adopted in 2006. Nothing like Christmas to make bad relationships worse. Madonna and Guy Ritchie are fighting about who will have their sons at Christmas.
Madonna wants Rocco, 8, and David, 2, to spend the holiday in New York while Ritchie wants them at his Wiltshire estate in England.
