Quote of the Day: "When I started, I just had sneakers, but now I'm sponsored by Evolv, so they gave me my favorite shoes, which are called Optimus Prime, who is the best and nicest Transformer." -- 8-year-old rock climber Ashima Shiraishi. Last summer, Shiraishi entered the open women's division of a bouldering competition at the Manhattan Plaza Health Club -- and took first place. As she told New York Magazine, she's been climbing for three...

More Green Mountain Bouldering: Looking For Lost Problems Last week Tara and I hiked in to Green Mountain, one of our favorite bouldering areas, to look for a couple hidden problems/areas that we had never seen. Known as Jung's Area and the Hobbit Area, these boulders reside on the far southern ridge/face of Green Mountain. If you have never been up here, this is a tangled mess of boulders, mini-cliffs, trees, and brush that sees little to no traffic (it is also closed for half the year for raptors). Trying to find boulders in this mess is nearly impossible. Even the more common boulders ... Read Full Story

New Boulder Problems In Eldorado: Gems Keep Coming A couple weeks ago Tara and I did some exploring in Eldorado to see if we couldn't find some new boulders. I've found a couple over the years, and each time we go out hunting, it seems like another Eldo "classic" appears. Well, on this occasion, just like on our recent exploration trip in Boulder Canyon , we found some lines we really wanted to try. So on Saturday we hauled our stuff all the way up to have a go. Dirty, steep, and full of potential is how they turned out. Coming out the roof... Read Full Story

New Boulders And Problems: Boulder Canyon And Bear Canyon Over the last week or so Tara and I have been doing a little exploring, looking for new boulders and problems to keep us busy this fall and winter. Often when one goes exploring, they come up empty handed. This is usually not a problem, as exploring entails spending your time in a new place looking for what could be. Sometimes, however, you do find a new bouldering problem, area, or location. In these cases, all of your efforts (the bushwhacking, scrambling, cleaning, etc.) pays off, and the reward proves to be well worth it. ... Read Full Story

In another attempt to get our legs into full mountain running shape, Tara and I decided to hit the Boulder Skyline Traverse. This is perhaps one of the most classic trail running traverse routes along the Colorado front range, and will easily test the leg endurance of any avid trail runner. The objective is easy : traverse all of the peaks along the Boulder skyline from Boulder Canyon to Eldorado Canyon. This includes Flagstaff, Green Mountain, Bear Mountain, and South Boulder Peak. The method : Getting a late start (10:20ish AM), we parked the car at Chautaqua and started up the Flagstaff Trail. From ... Read Full Story

Pacific Northwest: --Anders Ourom, a member of supertopo.com , posted a great article about climbing in Squamish and in the Coast Range in the early 1970's. The article includes a number of photos and remembrances from the time. My personal favorites are the following two photos. This is how they learned to belay back in the day in Cheakamus Canyon . Learning to belay -- Seriously old school (copyright © Anders Ourom, 2008) Cheakamus Canyon ( copyright © Anders Ourom, 2008) --After two climbers were reported missing on Mount Baker (10,781'), a rescue was initiated. Though the details ... Read Full Story
