I've made this trip three times, always with the boy scouts. First in the Fall of 1999, and then again in the Spring of 2005 and Spring 2008. This is a fun trip out into the middle of an arid wasteland with its own stark beauty. The trip is 2-3 hours from the Wasatch Front, depending on where you live and how fast you are willing to drive over the dirt roads. You could do it as a day trip, but I've always done it as an overnighter. The last two times we backpacked in from the road. The reward at the end is ... Read Full Story

www.rockhoundblog.com Hello, I just started a rockhound blog last week and I would love for you to check it out! Its a nonprofit blog that all about lapidary/rockhounding. Its about family values, education, showing off your latest finds and telling people about your local spots in your city to rockhound. I am hoping to build a national database on rockhound locations so anyone can access this info when they want to check out rockhounding. This will not hurt rockclubs but I believe make them more sought out as it will get more people interested in lapidary :) I welcome anyone to post a comment ... Read Full Story

I recently purchased a slab of material at an estate sale which I cannot identify. The tag said "varncite" but none of my reference materials mentions this term. The family running the sale knew nothing about rock. The matrix material is a light pink with black inclusions similar to rhodonite. The dark patches are an emerald green. Haven't tried to work this material since I would like to know what this is before I start cutting, grinding and polishing. If anyone knows what this is please email me at hoodnassc@nwinfo.net Thanks, Ryon Hood Read Full Story

Also, tourist info centers and small-town chambers of commerce can also supply valuable local information. The Internet can also be a useful tool and can help find buddies in the hobby. Rocks are classified by mineral and chemical composition, by the texture of the constituent ... Read Full Story
