Rod Blagojevich Impeachment Trial
Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested in December, 2008 and charged with federal corruption charges for allegedly trying to sell Barack Obama's vacant senate seat to the highest bidder. His impeachment trial began Jan. 26, 2009.
Blagojevich Convicted, Removed From Office - Sorry 'bout ya Oprah!!
The Illinois Senate unanimously voted to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office on Thursday after an FBI investigation revealed he tried to sell a U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder. Blagojevich will be immediately replaced by Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn, a fellow Democrat. No other Illinois governor has been impeached, let alone convicted in a Senate trial.![]()
The corruption behind this will go down in history as one of the most disrespectful gestures to the U.S. Government, the people of the U.S., and our way of life. I’m not here to rant about his inexcusable behavior though. The irony of this whole story is that just 3 days ago beloved talk show host Oprah Winfrey was mentioned by Blagojevich as a potential candidate he considered to replace Obama’s seat. When I first read that headline, I seriously thought it was a joke and laughed. But then I watched the interview and saw that he was actually serious.
Now I realize that celebrities have had success in politics in the past (i.e. Ronald Reagan, Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger), but Oprah Winfrey as a Senator would only perpetuate the stigma of celebrity politicians being the butt end of jokes around the country. I don’t know who I’d take more seriously, Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura, The Terminator aka Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Oprah Winfrey and her diet adventures. If Oprah was seriously considering a poltical career…I think her association with Blagojevish, her choice or not, ruined that dream!
