Rasmussen shows Republican Roger Wicker (pictured) with a 49 - 47 lead over former governor, Ronnie Musgrove for Mississippi's Senate seats. 538.com shows Wicker with a 1.8 lead. Super high black turnout can help Musgrove, but I still consider this to be Wicker's seat to lose, even though he's in the odd position of being the incumbent with less name recognition than his challenger. Why? It's been a Republican seat since the 1970s and Wicker was Gov. Haley Barbour's hand-picked successor. If Wicker loses, it will be a sign of general discontent with the GOP (i.e. the same reason Democrat Travis Childers won Mississippi's ... Read Full Story

Fox has called the Mississippi Senatorial race between Republican Roger Wicker and former Democrat governor Ronnie Musgrove. In a close and hard fought battle, Wicker is the winner. A bright spot for the GOP in an otherwise Democrat night, this victory ensures that the Dems will not get to the filibuster-proof limit of 60 votes. The Musgrove-Wicker debate was close, slight edge to Musgrove but unlikely to change any minds. Now that the nationwide economic crisis is starting to have effects in Mississippi , it will be important for Democrats campaigning in our state to continue to stress the relationship between Republican economic policies and our current economic situation. Musgrove managed to do this effectively in the debate, but more reminders will be needed. I suppose the real question will be whether Mississippi voters will set aside the various wedge issues (e.g., abortion, gay marriage, etc.) in this election to vote for their economic self-interest. If there was ever ... Read Full Story

Roger Wicker (R-MS), who is facing a tough challenge from former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove (D). This ad ties Musgrove, who is a pro-life social conservative and economic populist, to the liberal Democratic leadership in Washington -- and apparently to the Village People, too: "The largest gay-rights group in the country," the man in the cowboy outfit says with a grin. None of the liberal interest groups named in the ad have donated directly to Musgrove. But the issue for the Wicker campaign is ... Read Full Story

Former Mississippi governor, Ronnie Musgrove was a busy guy when he was in office. In addition to converting a $230 million surplus to a $700 million deficit and declaring a day in honor of himself , Musgrove proclaimed a lot of other special days. Just one small catch, though. You had to contribute to his campaign. Here's a little table of his record. (My apologies for any formatting glitches - I'm learning how to create tables in HTML.) Contribution Day of Proclamation On May 20, 1999, a James E. Winfield gave $300 to Ronnie Musgrove’s gubernatorial campaign. On June 7, 2000, Ronnie Musgrove issued ... Read Full Story
