Gracie became well-known in the mid 1990s with a string of submission victories over larger opponents in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Between 1993 and 1994, he won 11 matches by submission and was the tournament winner of UFC 1, UFC 2, UFC 4, and fought to a draw with Ken Shamrock in the superfight at UFC 5. These results contributed to the movement towards grappling, cross-training and MMA.

Yesterday I tested for orange belt in Shorinji Kan Jiu-jitsu. Today I feel like I've been hit by a Mac truck. I am happy to report, however, that I was awarded my orange belt with 3 mons (the highest level of pass for orange). :) I think the person who ordered the belt over-estimated the size of my waistline though. The UFC today announced it has partnered with Grapplers Quest to host the first-ever UFC sponsored grappling tournament.
Held in conjunction with the historic UFC 100, the tournament will be held on July 10 and 11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center as part of the previously announced UFC Fan Expo.

Ben Askren, a two-time NCAA Division I national wrestling champion who recently jumped into mixed martial arts, moved to 2-0 as a pro with a weekend victory in Missouri.
Askren scored a first-round submission victory over Mitchell Harris at Saturday's Patriot Act II event in Columbia.
The event was held in conjunction with American Top Team of Missouri, where Askren, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt, serves as the lead instructor of the gym's wrestling program.

Rolles Gracie (3-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), part of MMA's legendary Gracie clan, has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC and is expected to meet fellow heavyweight Mostapha Al-Turk (6-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at UFC 109 in February.
Gracie and his management team announced the signing via Twitter on late Tuesday.
Although not officially announced by the organization, UFC 109 is expected to take place Feb. 6 in Las Vegas.
