Bea Arthur, who portrayed Dorothy on “Golden Girls,” died peacefully at her Los Angeles home at the age of 86 with her family at her side. She had cancer. “She was a brilliant and witty woman,” said family spokesman Dan Watt, who was Arthur’s personal assistant for six years. “Bea will always have a special place in my heart.” Arthur had a ground-breaking career, appearing on “All in the Family” as Edith Bunker’s loud, liberal cousin, Maude Finley, then heading to her own spin-off, “Maude,” at the age of 50. As the saucy, slutty Blanche for seven seasons on "The Golden Girls" (and don't forget the one season of "The Golden Palace"), Rue McClanahan became an Emmy winner and a gay icon for playing waaaay against type. Betty White had played the slutty Sue Ann Nivens on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" while Rue was to play sweet and childlike Rose.
