Ryan Zimmerman hit his 30th homer, Josh Bard drove in three runs and the Washington Nationals held off the free-falling New York Mets 6-5 on Friday night. New York rallied for three runs in a wild ninth inning and had runners at second and third when Jeff Francoeur hit a comebacker that knocked Mike MacDougal's glove off his hand. With his mitt on the ground in front of him, the reliever picked up the ball barehanded and lobbed a shaky throw to first for the final out. Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday night against Florida because of a sore left shoulder. Zimmerman was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton in the sixth inning of Monday's 8-4 victory over Pittsburgh. The soreness apparently got worse as the night went on, even though Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Interim manager Jim Riggleman said the decision was made to give Zimmerman a break, and both said this is a day-to-day thing. Zimmerman has played in 103 of Washington's 106 games this year. That becomes a real possibility if a longer deal is not struck this week — and far more likely if the two sides return to arbitration next February. Zimmerman is asking for $3.9 million while the Nats countered ... Read Full Story

A few hours later, Jim Riggleman, who single-handedly skippered the Nationals away from the horror of becoming the latter-day ’62 Mets, was named the team’s permanent manager.   Now, neither of...
