Pursuing Google PageRank or SERP page rank

Yesterday, I was doing a keyword brainstorming for the keyword term “home office rugs”. The Adwords keyword tool external showed that this term was searched for 140 searches in monthly average. Then I checked the competition for this keyword term using Google search box by typing in the query “home office rugs” and found an interesting fact that one of my post is sitting by the second top SERP listing for that keyword i.e. this post is about how to decorating home office with rugs. What’s the interesting part is that the pagerank is zero or null.

In very basic terms, your Google pagerank is calculated using the pagerank of other sites which link to your blog, combined with other criteria. The pagerank value depends on the PR value of the page the link comes from and the number of outbound links from that page. Many believe that the relationship between pagerank levels is logarithmic and not linear. In other words a PR5 is not “worth” 25% more than a PR4 but could in fact be “worth” much more.

Furthermore a pagerank value is not just a number. It is a range of values. So not all PR5 ranked pages are equal. You could go in for pages and pages about the theories involved which go on to calculating your Google pagerank. Unfortunately, even hundred pages of theory won’t disguise the fact that the only people who really know are Google themselves. For surely, the Google pagerank of your site is a factor in determining the search engine ranking of your web site but it’s not the only factor. And it’s certainly not the only one criteria that many web site owners think it is.

Why dedicate all your hard work to try and move from a PR3 to a PR4 when there are much more productive ways to bring your blog to top rank on search engine?
