Scientists have started to scan the heavens with a new telescope that searches for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (Courtesy Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer, SETI Institute) New Tools Help in Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence OPINION By LEE DYE June 3, 2009 — An innovative new radio telescope has given new life to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence , leading one of the leaders of the search to make a bold prediction. "We'll find ET within two dozen years," Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute , proclaimed in a speech at the California Institute of Technology. ... Read Full Story

SETI was originally part of NASA , now an independant organization and funded by donations is searching the universe for life. You’ll hear that the search for life in the universe is almost entirely an American inititive. SETI is trying to receive messages from aliens on far planets - an electronic message in a bottle. This is a great interview with SETI’s Seth Shostak. Shostak mostly seriously, I think, wants to beam the World Wide Web into outer space. You’ll be intrigued by his rational for sending the World Wid Web from Google’s servers, complete with all the pornography out to the stars (about ... Read Full Story

Nature.com -- Despite the long odds against success, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has come a long way. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), a research discipline that celebrates the 50th anniversary of its inaugural publication this week, has always sat at the edge of mainstream astronomy. This is partly because, no matter how scientifically rigorous its practitioners try to be, SETI can't escape an association with UFO believers and other such crackpots. But it is also because SETI is arguably not a falsifiable experiment. Regardless of how exhaustively the Galaxy is searched, the null result of radio silence doesn't rule out the existence ... Scientists have been searching for aliens for 50 years, scanning the skies with an ever-more sophisticated array of radio telescopes and computers. Known as Seti, the search marks its half-century this month. Jennifer Armstrong and Andrew Johnson examine its close – and not so close – encounters Rex Scientists have been searching for aliens for 50 years enlarge 1. Seti stands for the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. 2. If intelligent aliens are out there, Dr Seth Shostak, the Seti Institute's senior astronomer, believes they will be "thinking machines". He believes a highly advanced species will be several centuries ahead of us in technological development. ... Read Full Story

The most Sun-like star ever found has some astronomers very excited. They say a planetary system around such a star would be the ideal place to find intelligent life. HIP 56948 is a star that lies a little more than 200 light years from Earth. Everything about this star, including its size, mass, temperature, and chemical makeup, are all so similar to the Sun's that no measurable differences have yet been detected. The analysis was carried out by Jorge Melendez of Mount Stromlo Observatory in Weston Creek, Australia, and Ivan Ramirez of the University of Texas in Austin using high-resolution observations made by the ... The new Allen Telescope Array, a radio astronomy telescope system to be used in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, recently began operation in Hat Creek, Calif. The original SETI array, named Project Phoenix, stopped looking for alien signals in 2004 after looking at only 800 stars over the course of about 10 years.

Building computers is, in a way a matter of knowing the rules and following them. On a basic level it is plugging the right connector into the right plug, be it a ZIFF socket or a 12V power connector. Beyond that come secondary rules, like not mixing RAM and ensuring that temperatures remain reasonable. Others are more complex, like overclocking...
