Scientists have started to scan the heavens with a new telescope that searches for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (Courtesy Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer, SETI Institute) New Tools Help in Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence OPINION By LEE DYE June 3, 2009 — An innovative new radio telescope has given new life to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence , leading one of the leaders of the search to make a bold prediction. "We'll find ET within two dozen years," Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute , proclaimed in a speech at the California Institute of Technology. ... Read Full Story

SETI was originally part of NASA , now an independant organization and funded by donations is searching the universe for life. You’ll hear that the search for life in the universe is almost entirely an American inititive. SETI is trying to receive messages from aliens on far planets - an electronic message in a bottle. This is a great interview with SETI’s Seth Shostak. Shostak mostly seriously, I think, wants to beam the World Wide Web into outer space. You’ll be intrigued by his rational for sending the World Wid Web from Google’s servers, complete with all the pornography out to the stars (about ... Read Full Story

CWT - Hat Creek, CA. A confidential Cats With Thumbs source at the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) Allen Telescope Array confirmed to our reporter several messages originating from at least 25,000 light years away were received on December 18, 2007 at the Hat Creek monitoring station and verified by SETI scientists at the University of California, Berkley: " This should have been a red-letter day for SETI and the Nation," our source confided on condition he remain anonymous; " instead, we finally hear from intelligent beings outside our solar system and they tell us to stop bothering them. The most Sun-like star ever found has some astronomers very excited. They say a planetary system around such a star would be the ideal place to find intelligent life. HIP 56948 is a star that lies a little more than 200 light years from Earth. Everything about this star, including its size, mass, temperature, and chemical makeup, are all so similar to the Sun's that no measurable differences have yet been detected. The analysis was carried out by Jorge Melendez of Mount Stromlo Observatory in Weston Creek, Australia, and Ivan Ramirez of the University of Texas in Austin using high-resolution observations made by the ... SETI's hunt for ET is revving up to warp speed, thanks largely to an infusion of $25 million from Seattle's most famous science-fiction fan, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Allen will join scientists from SETI — the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence — to unveil the Allen Telescope Array devoted to answering the question: Is anyone out there? The observatory consists of an array of 42 radio dishes perched atop a volcanic plateau in Hat Creek, 300 miles northeast of San Francisco. "It's the longshot of longshots, but if we did hear a signal from another civilization, that would be world-changing," said Allen, in an interview ... Read Full Story

Scientists have been searching for aliens for 50 years, scanning the skies with an ever-more sophisticated array of radio telescopes and computers. Known as Seti, the search marks its half-century this month. Jennifer Armstrong and Andrew Johnson examine its close – and not so close – encounters Rex Scientists have been searching for aliens for 50 years enlarge 1. Seti stands for the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. 2. If intelligent aliens are out there, Dr Seth Shostak, the Seti Institute's senior astronomer, believes they will be "thinking machines". He believes a highly advanced species will be several centuries ahead of us in technological development. ... Read Full Story
Astronomers with the European Southern Observatory have just revealed the first images from their new telescope called VISTA: the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy. If ever there was an appropriate name for a ’scope, that’s it. Why? Here’s why: Oh baby. Yeah, click it to embiggen. This image is of the Flame Nebula, a star forming gas cloud in Orion. The image itself covers about half a square degree on the sky (twice the...

Brad Niesluchowski used to be the network systems administrator at Higley Unified School District. Until he got fired for searching for aliens using the SETI program, in which he's the #1 contributor. Well, for that, and a lot more things. Niesluchowski was known as NEZ at the SETI volunteer program. He scored 575 million hours of data mining during a nine years period, which pushed him to "god" status among the SETI@home users, who in 2007...
