There are a large number of Buddhist temples in Kyoto, Japan. Buddhism, the doctrine of Buddha, was first introduced from Korea in the 6 th century. There are also hundreds of Shinto shrines. Shrines, like temples, are places of worship and the dwellings of Kami , or gods. How does a shrine differ from a temple you ask? Shrines are different in that Shinto is an animistic religion that believes gods exist everywhere around us. At shrines, for example, people pray for protection from evil or for the safety and prosperity of their families. Here are 5 temples and shrines that represent the cultural ... Read Full Story

It's not every day warlocks and battle-bots, space ninjas and kinky maids bump shoulders in a crowd, but then the Japanese youth cult of Cosplay is all about letting go of everyday life. A contraction of the words costume and play, Cosplay is a craze born in Tokyo's Harajuku fashion district where teenagers have long been turning heads with eye-popping handmade costumes of manga cartoon and anime movie characters. From trendy Harajuku, spiritual home of the 'Gothic Lolita' look, Cosplay has spawned a global cult following, with youngsters from Thailand to Brazil slipping into their favourite fantasy alter-egos at mass conventions. Last weekend, the ... Read Full Story

Read Full Story

Recommendations for surreal Japanese humor? Although I've been hep to the anime since Battle of the Planets in '78, there're no anime/manga fans in my peer group to get recommendations from. I dig the brooding minimalism of Gatchaman, and the beauty of Miyazaki, but what's really been floating my boat is the surreal humor of Azumanga Daioh and Cromartie High School (and Junko Mizuno's manga, but not much has made it over here). Is there...

In reply to Manga Library in Japan: Hello, I think it is a very good idea because by now, the Mangas take an important part of the Japanese culture. I think that it will make Japanese people knows more of their country and their history. But I don't see how it can be a field of study. I mean the Manga is obviously full of historical and cultural reference but this kind of novels doesn't contain detailed about the history. There are only few...

The Viz folks have a Q&A with Rumiko Takahashi on The Rumic World, the site that hosts her manga Rin-ne. It’s about as informative as every other interview with a manga creator, which is to say, not very. All the school libraries—elementary, middle, and high school—in Wicomico County, Maryland, have removed all the volumes of Dragon [...]
