Software as Service is the term for a new delivery model that is changing the balance of power in the software industry from the vendor towards the customer. Instead of installing and managing software on a server or your desktop, you subscribe to it as a service, so you only need a web browser on an Internet connected PC. The chracateristics of a SaaS system are:
1. The application is owned, delivered, and managed remotely by one or more providers
2. The application is based on single set of common code and data definitions which are consumed in a one-to-many model by all contracted customers at any time.
3. The application is licensed on pay-per-use or subscription basis
This portal collects together SaaS material from around the web.

Earlier in the month, Phil Wainewright commented on rumours swirling around that NetSuite would go public. Now it seems such a move is in the wind with a $1 billion valuation. Or at least Mike Arrington says so. Mid-month, BusinessWeek had discussed the possible deal in some detail.
NetSuite is a company with top line revenue for 2006 of around $70 million. If $1 billion is achieved, that translates into a 14 times multiple. Given they are looking for $100 million as fresh capital then...

I’m a huge fan of Freshbooks so I was really pleased to see they’re providing data points for the value SaaS delivers to the SMB market:
Here are some highlights from the survey:
* Avg. # of hours you spent invoicing/month before FreshBooks: 8.05
* Avg. # of hours you spent invoicing/month using FreshBooks: 3.23
Put another way, using FreshBooks, it takes less than half the time (60% less!) to do your invoicing each month.
* Avg. # of days it took to get paid before...

I heard about two significant initiatives from BT last week, that weren’t given much fanfare, but could turn out to be very important for both the SaaS market in the UK, and BT’s position within it. I’ve mentioned that one of the key messages at Microsoft ISV Innovation Day, last Thursday at Thames Valley Park, was the rise in importance of the SaaS topic. With the help of IDC, Microsoft were giving strong guidance to their ISVs that they should make plans to adopt this delivery model as a...

Every time I log into Facebook, or search for flights online, I am taking advantage of cloud computing. However, neither of these examples would be considered SaaS. According to Gartner, cloud computing is not just a buzzword; it does have a distinct meaning separate from SaaS.
