'Fifty Shades of Grey' Lands a Director Who Is Probably Pretty Into the Books

Sam Taylor-Wood (Getty Images)The long search for the perfect Fifty Shades of Grey director is finally over, and the hire, Sam Taylor-Johnson, does seem pretty perfect. Indie film fans will know her as the director of Nowhere Boy, the John Lennon biopic starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, that seems to suggest there was an incestuous attraction between Lennon and his biological mother, Julia.

It was on the set of
Nowhere Boy that she began a relationship with Johnson, later the star of Kick-Ass, who is 23 years younger than her, and who has fathered two children with her in the past three years. It seems fitting that someone *ahem* open-minded *ahem* enough to begin a relationship with someone so much younger (and indulge in all the power dynamics such a relationship entails), should take on a movie that involves some very serious sexual power dynamics. Producer Michael De Luca had to have had this in the back of his mind (or maybe the front) when picking Taylor-Johnson from the pool of enthusiastic candidates in one of the most high-profile director hunts in recent memory.

"Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life,” he said in a statement. “E.L. James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed, and Sam is a natural fit.”

For her part, Sam sounds like a fan. Here's her canned quote.

“I am excited to be charged with the evolution of Fifty Shades of Grey from page to screen. For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”

Now that a director is attached, we can all get back to speculating and worrying about who will be starring in the film adaptation of the three very popular, very kinky books. Maybe now that Sam's onboard, Aaron will be in the running for Christian?
