Getty Images. On Monday, 45-year-old Samantha Geimer filed a legal declaration at the Los Angeles County district attorney's office requesting that the statutory rape charge against
Roman Polanski be dismissed.
I have survived, indeed prevailed, against whatever harm Mr. Polanski may have caused me as a child.
- Samantha Geimer
Polanski, 75, was accused in 1977 of having raped and sodomized Geimer, then a 13-year-old model known as Samantha Gailey. Initial charges against him were dropped under the terms of his plea bargain, and Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, a lesser charge. He fled the country instead of submitting to a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation at a state prison. Polanski argued in his autobiography that Geimer's mother had set him up in a blackmail scheme.
Geimer attended the premiere of HBO's documentary on the case.
Evidence presented in a recent HBO documentary,
Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, caused Polanski and his lawyer, Douglas Dalton, to seek a review of whether the prosecutor's actions were illegal.
On January 6, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren filed a motion that included sexually explicit descriptions of Geimer's assault - descriptions, Geimer says, that are victimizing her and her family. Geimer said:
My views as a victim, my feelings as a victim, or my desires as a victim were never considered or even inquired into by the district attorney prior to the filing. It is clear to me that because the district attorney's office has been accused of wrongdoing, it has recited the lurid details of the case to distract attention from the wrongful conduct of the district attorney's office as well as the judge who was then assigned to the case.
