This islands hosts frigate birds, sea lions, giant tortoises, blue and red footed boobies, tropicbirds, marine iguanas, dolphins, swallow-tailed gulls. Its vegetation includes Calandrinia galapagos, Lecocarpus darwinii, and trees such as Lignum vitae.The largest fresh water lake in the archipelago, Laguna El Junco, is located in the highlands of San Cristóbal. The capital of the province of Galápagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, lies at the southern tip of the island.

The IT company Indra has developed an air space surveillance station whose environmental impact has been reduced to almost zero in the Galapagos islands (Ecuador), one of the areas with the strongest environmental laws in the world. A Peruvian Navy ship carrying tonnes of fuel was temporarily stranded in the Galapagos Islands, prompting the ecological gem's warden Ecuador to launch an investigation, officials said. The vessel "did not have the relevant permission to enter with the fuel," Ecuadorian Navy official Jaime Ayala said in a statement. Ecuadorian authorities will determine in their probe whether sanctions will be deemed necessary for those responsible for the breach. Ecuador banned vessels holding fuel after an oil tanker grounding in 2001 resulted in ecological disaster for the unique islands, which lie in the Pacific Ocean some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) west of mainland Ecuador. After 12 hours here in The Galapagos I decided to extend my stay for another week! A quick bike ride to the airport,then about 12 steps from parking the bike to the AeroGal office followed by about 10 clicks on her computer and the job was done, no charge, no fuss. Noteworthy species include:

* Galápagos land iguanas, Conolophus, are huge land lizards. They walk very slowly and enjoy baking in the hot sun.
* Marine Iguanas, Amblyrhynchus cristatus, are the only iguanas who in the sea. They are usually darker in color than the land iguanas.
* Galápagos tortoises (Galápagos Giant tortoises), Geochelone elephantopus, are huge ancient turtles.
* Galápagos Green Turtles, Chelonia mydas agassisi, are a subspecies of the traditional green turtle.
* Sea cucumbers are often the cause of environmental battles with fishermen over quotas of this expensive Asian delicacy.
* Flightless Cormorants, Phalacrocorax harrisi, are land locked birds
* Great Frigatebird and Magnificent Frigatebird, puff up their red chests to attract mates.
* Blue-footed Boobies, Sula nebouxii, are popular among visitors for their large blue feet.
* Galápagos Penguins, Spheniscus mendiculus, are the only living tropical penguins in the world
* Waved Albatross, Phoebastria irrorata, is the only living tropical albatross
* Galápagos Hawks, Buteo galapagoensis, are the islands' main scavenger and "environmental police"
