A San Francisco supervisor is asking the city attorney to weigh in on a controversial law that keeps police from immediately reporting illegal immigrant youths to authorities. Criminal proceedings against a 30-year-old homeless man accused of five separate unprovoked stabbings in San Francisco this year, three of them on San Francisco Municipal Railways, were suspended indefinitely Friday after the man's attorney declared a doubt about his mental competency.

State inspectors say an oil spill that sent hundreds of gallons of bunker oil into San Francisco Bay was caused by a fuel tank that overflowed during a morning refueling stop. San Francisco police Tuesday arrested a homeless man for allegedly lighting another homeless man on fire earlier this month as the man lay sleeping in Golden Gate Park. Police arrested a San Francisco woman for murder after she reported her male friend unconscious in his South of Market apartment Sunday night and officers arrived to find him dead.
