Believe it or not, I lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 1990 to 2000 but never had a chance to visit one of the most famous and traditional sites in the city: the Jockey Club. However, I was fortunate enough to visit this glamorous place with dear friends last Sunday. It was a very hot and delightful day.
The Jockey Club of Sao Paulo city was founded in March 14th, 1875. Nowadays, it houses 1,500 pure-blood English horses in addition to other 500 race horses kept at its adjacent training... Read Full Story
Police in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have killed more than 11,000 people in the past six years, many execution-style, according to a report released Tuesday by Human Rights Watch. Few of the officers have been charged in the extrajudicial killings, which are often labeled in police reports as the deaths of suspects who resisted arrest, the report said. The 122-page declaration echoes a 2008 United Nations' finding that police throughout Brazil were responsible for a "significant portion... Read Full Story

Brazilians may be seeing a whole lot more of the student whose short pink dress got her booted from college: She's agreed to march in the nation's famously flesh-baring Carnival parades. SAO SEBASTIAO DE CUIEIRAS, Brazil (Reuters) - The task of harvesting the secrets of Brazil's vast Amazon rain forest that could help in the battle against cancer largely falls to Osmar Barbosa Ferreira and a big pair of clippers. In jungle so dense it all but blocks out the sun, the lithe 46-year-old shimmies up a thin tree helped by a harness, a strap between his feet, and the expertise gained from a lifetime laboring in the forest. A few well-placed snips later, branches cascade to a small... Read Full Story
