Last week, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin told a pro-life audience in Indiana that she considered having an abortion twice during her last pregnancy, using the euphemisms "change the circumstances," "take care of it," and "make it go away" to avoid the dreaded A-word.

It was part of a speech intended to demonstrate her commitment to the pro-life cause. Ms. Palin said that twice—when she found out she was pregnant with her fifth child and again when she received the results of the amnioscentesis that showed Trig would be born with Down syndrome—she considered that it would be very easy to "change the circumstances" without anyone knowing. Ultimately she chose not to, and Palin is now using her pride in that decision as a rallying point for the pro-life cause.

Her speech was well-received in Indiana, but it has been pointed out by many, including the Washington Post's Ruth Marcus, that Ms. Palin's speech was a better argument for choice than anything else. Gov. Palin chose not to have an abortion. It was a personal choice. That she could use her own choice as somehow evidentiary that the choice should not exist for all women is, well, hypocritical, to say the least.
