Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd voiced "concerns" about the Church of Scientology Wednesday after a senator detailed explosive allegations including torture, imprisonment and coerced abortions. Rudd said the accusations, made by independent Senator Nick Xenophon in parliament late Tuesday but strenuously denied by the organisation, were "grave" and needed further consideration. "Many people in Australia have real concerns about Scientology. I share some of those concerns," the prime minister said. "I don't want to rush into any judgement on this, other than to say (Xenophon) raised concerns and made some serious allegations," he added. "Let us proceed carefully and look carefully at the material ... Read Full Story

Was Jesus a pedophile, filled with hatred and rage? That's what Scientology seems to say. The authenticity of Scientology's "OT VIII: Confidential Student Briefing" document has been vehemently denied by Scientology. No wonder they would deny it -- this makes the Xenu story of OT III seem merely "odd." However, Scientology's denial of this document has a great deal in common with the cult's 30+ year denial of OT III. "OT-VIII"-level people who have left the cult in the past 20 years or so say they do not remember this text. I am not surprised: If this document is indeed authentic, it is quite ... Read Full Story

The Church of Scientology is going through a difficult season. Over the course of two days last week, a French court convicted the church of fraud and Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis' resignation from the church over a litany of concerns was aired publicly. On one hand, it was just another bad press week for the embattled institution founded in 1953 by the late science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. But for former Scientologists and scholars of the movement, the setbacks pose a greater challenge coming on the heels of defections of top-level Scientologists who lifted a veil of secrecy on the organization and alleged ... Just put a sheaf of Monthly Review's in a bookshelf that contains, among other things, Scientology pamphlets about faith healing that I got from the "L. Ron Hubbard Life Experience Museum" in L.A. It was hot, the thing was air conditioned, and I have somewhat of an interest in Scientology, although not really to the level of actually being part of it. The museum itself was schlocky in the extreme

The attack on the Church of Scientology as a ''criminal organisation'' by the South Australian senator Nick Xenophon this week has sent the anti-Scientology movement into a spin but not for the obvious reason. Draw near, infidels, for these are dark days for the Knights of Hubbard. Do not despair entirely – the Church of Scientology remains insanely rich, has excellent and rapacious lawyers, and according to the International Scientology News, "every minute of every hour, someone reaches for L Ron Hubbard technology … simply because they know Tom Cruise is a Scientologist". So unless the world's supply of troubled fools is melting away quicker than...

Filed under: Religion, DisputationsIt's been a tough stretch for Scientology. The church founded by the late science fiction writer (and great prophet/odd duck/complete kook -- take your pick) L. Ron Hubbard in 1953 was dinged nearly a million bucks by a Paris court on Tuesday after convicting six leaders of the French branch of Scientology of organized fraud in duping recruits out of lots of money. Of course, given the number of high...

Members of this 'inner circle' of devotees are required to sign a contract agreeing to serve Sea Org 'for the next billion years.' Sea Organization or Sea Org is a sort of "religious order" within Scientology where only the most committed members of the late L. Ron Hubbard's cult live out their lives. For the unborn child of a mother in Sea Org, that isn't very long. They are aborted. Members of this "inner circle" of devotees are required...
