According to the subsequent investigation by special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, calls the State Department to ask about the results of former ambassador Joseph Wilson's trip to Niger . Libby asks an undersecretary of state, presumably Marc Grossman , for the information. Grossman is allegedly involved in a nuclear smuggling ring (see and ), and knows Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame...
