1998, the year Corey and I graduated high school, the year the Philadelphia Phillies finished a dismal 75-87. At the helm was current BoSox manager Terry Francona. Although it was only 10 seasons ago, there are only 6 players still active in MLB (Scott Rolen, Bobby Abreu, Marlon Anderson, Gary Bennett, Paul Byrd, and Curt Schilling). Take a stroll down memory lane with me now as we gaze into the Phils team of 1998. Lineup: Catcher- Recently retired Mike Lieberthal split time behind the plate...Read Full Story
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese has been arrested in St. Louis County on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Police in Maryland Heights, Mo., gave details of the arrest Monday. Freese was stopped at 2:40 a.m. Saturday for a traffic offense, then given a sobriety test. Details of the sobriety test were not released, but Freese was arrested for driving while intoxicated and failure to drive within a single lane. Freese's agent says he is remorseful and is eager to put the...Read Full Story
Reds third baseman Scott Rolen has been given a cortisone shot in his right hamstring and is out of the lineup indefinitely. Manager Dusty Baker says Monday the team will decide in the next day or two whether to put him on the 15-day disabled list. Rolen has been a catalyst in the Reds' improvement this season. They fell out of first place in the NL Central for the first time in 18 days with a 1-0 loss to Colorado on Sunday. Rolen said he felt a burning in the hamstring when he tagged up...Read Full Story
Scott Rolen agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds through the 2012 season, an indication of how much they value the 34-year-old third baseman as a clubhouse leader. Rolen had one season left on an eight-year, $90 million deal that he signed with St. Louis. He will get $11 million next year, one of four Reds players scheduled to make that much. Cincinnati is trying to trade at least one of them to lower the payroll. The Reds got Rolen in a trade with Toronto last...Read Full Story
The health, or lack thereof, of Scott Rolen will be a big part of the Reds' 2012 season. Rolen's success in 2010 was key to the division championship that year, just as his ability to play only 65 games last year, and hit but .242 with a 676 OPS while doing it, was a big factor in the team falling under .500. Which Rolen will show up this year? The big third baseman turns 37 about the same time as the season starts, so the odds are not...

Scott Rolen might someday trace an unjust Hall of Fame snub to his 2005 collision with Dodgers' 1B Hee Sop-Choi - an incident that resulted in a labrum tear and ultimately required surgery. The following season, without the help of even one stem cell, he played 147 games and slashed .296/.369/.518. Rolen's shoulder began nagging him toward the end of 2007, requiring surgery for scar tissue removal. The next season, he injured his...
