Scotty McCreery's 'No José' National Anthem, and Other Memorable Anthem Flubs

Scotty recovered beautifully from initial technical difficulties, but while McCreery's fans were likely satisfied by his twangy presentation, others noticed something strange about the North Carolina native's wording: It sounded like he said "No José" instead of "Oh say" near the end of the song.

Listen for it. "No José does that star-spangled banner yet wave." It's possible his accent comes across to northerners as over-enunciation.

But even if Scotty did shout out to the mysterious José, it's cool: Many a seasoned performer has had trouble with "The Star-Spangled Banner." And it's hilarious almost every time.

Here are a few of the most memorable:

Keri Hilson
Miss Keri Baby delivered a pitch-perfect performance of the national anthem at an Atlanta Hawks game in March 2010 – it's a pity she didn't have such luck with the actual lyrics. Hilson initially forgot the "O'er the ramparts" line, revisiting "What so proudly we hailed" before backtracking. She ultimately powered through, but not after drawing whispers and giggles from the audience.

Cyndi Lauper
Not even Cyndi Lauper's thigh-high boots could distract the audience at the 2011 US Open from her ill-timed lyrical fail, which happened to go down on September 11. Lauper confused the line "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming" with her own take, "O'er the ramparts, we watched as our flag was still streaming." To be fair to Lauper, her version is easier to understand.

Jesse McCartney
In October 2009, sometimes heartthrob Jesse McCartney caused some chuckling at the NASCAR Pepsi 500 in California when he was apparently unable to remember the national anthem's first line. McCartney's version: "Oh say can you see / by dawn's early light / Whose bright stripes and bright stars / through the perilous fight." WRONG!

Roseanne Barr
In 1990, comedian Roseanne Barr caused a national scandal when she screamed her way through "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a San Diego Padres game, getting the lyrics right but in the most shrill manner possible. After she finished, she grabbed her crotch and spit in a perfect imitation of a baseball player. The audience found it more offensive than hilarious. They booed.

Carl Lewis
In 1993, Olympic champion Carl Lewis tried to show off his pipes at a Bulls-Nets game. Unfortunately, dude does not sing as well as he sprints. He did so poorly, at one point he stopped and promised, "I'll make up for it now" before completely changing the song's tune to avoid hurting the audience's ears.

Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera had the most embarrassing national anthem fail by far, thanks to her bizarre choice of words mid-song just before the 2011 Super Bowl. She not only left out the "O'er the ramparts we watch'd" line, she tried to combine two other lines before barreling through the phrase,"At the twilight's last reaming." Um. Gross. She then played up her range for a good thirty seconds.
