Spare Change
An old beggar was sitting on the street corner, holding out a cardboard sign that read "Homeless; Needs Food". A young businessman in a sharply pressed suit stopped by him and asked him, "What could I give you to improve your fortunes, old man?" "Please, all I need is some spare change for some food," replied the beggar. The man in the suit laughed and said, "Foolish man, haven't you heard that giving a man a fish will only feed him for a day? My spare change will only worsen your destitution." With that, he walked away, feeling good that he had saved the old man from a worse fate.
The next day, the old beggar on the corner died of cold and starvation.
Ah, how often we pursue the moral high ground without knowing it isn't the high ground at all.
