Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by nearly 100,000 people from around the globe.
SL Triathlon, the only global triathlon party in the virtual world of Second Life, invites you to a party and a fun triathlon race. Just bring yourself and your avatar along. Ironman South Africa and Arizona both take place in real life on April 13, 2008. We will follow the action live via SL Triathlon. Your avatars can dance, chat and also participate in a fun rave at 6pm GMT at the SL Triathlon venue. Read Full Story
Harper B introduced herself at Mia Lundquist’s gallery opening at Cetus , and gave me the LM for this fantastic installation by Douglas Story and friends, which Therese has also written about . When we got kicked out of Cetus (thank you Lindens ), I TP’d over to have a look. The installation is superb, a giant flower structure nestling in the landscape, with ambient music and shapes that shift as you walk over them. There is more information on the Dynafleur blog . Harper has lots of... Read Full Story
Comverse innovation labs has created a platform which transfers high quality 3D games to mobile devices. Here is a video that was taken in 3GSM Barcelona. This technology is pretty cool (Well I’m biased… this technology was developed here!! by my colleagues). Basically, users will be able to play 3D games in virtually any “browser supported” mobile device without the need of installing a dedicated client. This scenario became reality because most of the processing is done on the server... Read Full Story
When someone uses virtual money to pay off real life debts, this someone has got to be one of the lamest persons around.
But hey, in this world, it actually makes sense and is actually a tribute to how accepted virtual economies are. But still, don’t go stealing anything that is not yours – virtual or not.
A fellow in Toronto took away the money cache from the virtual bank of EVE Online and exchanged it for real cash with the black market. Can you say virtual bank heist... Read Full Story
I discovered over the weekend that you can sorta make a living--albeit in Linden Dollars--as a Second Life hooker . (The current exchange rate is 250 Linden Dollars to the US Dollar, and a high-priced Second Life call girl makes 2000-3000 a night, which amounts to 3 or 4 lattes in the real world.) I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, because every economy in the real world also seems to exist on Second Life , but I've never actually been on Second Life, nor have I even had the inclination... The other day I finally met up in First Life with my best and oldest SL friend, the excellent Caterin . We relaxed over a few (yes, a few) drinks in a London bar, after some confusion, and texting back and forth over which bar we were supposed to be in (quite like SL, really), and shared our memories of exploits in the virtual world. I did worry beforehand whether I would recognise her, but I needn’t have. If the residents were surprised by Caterin’s stunning appearance, they seemed... Read Full Story

In my questing for social toolbars and virtual worlds, I came across a virtual worlds site that had a host of online virtual worlds. VirtualWorldsReview.com This site contains a massive listing of cool virtual worlds sites like beta/Playdo.com .
What a nifty site! Place images or video over each other (layering) when creating your profile page here, reduce the opacity to make them transparent (need Adobe Macro Media Shockwave Player for this... Read Full Story

Sometimes the technologies for commercial and free virtual worlds are like the Saiyans of Dragon Ball Z. There should always be something more powerful – no one can be outdone. A few days ago we brought up here the technology which allows people with motor disabilities to use eye contact in order to participate in virtual worlds . Read Full Story
