Will Segolene Royal best Francois Bayrou this weekend

French elections are heating up, and this Sunday we'll find out which two candidates make it to the next round.  The big battle this weekend is for second place.

François Bayrou and Segolene Royal are the most likely candidates to face off against Nicolas Sarkozy.  Most polls are showing Royal ahead of Bayrou.

Campaigning must officially stop today, so we are entering the quiet before the storm.  Voting opens up on Sunday.

French elections are designed to first choose the top 2 contenders from all candidates (there are often more than 5 legit contenders), and then hold a final election to slelect a winner from the 2.  This ensures that the final winner receives more than 50% of the votes before winning the post.

Polls show that Nicolas Sarkozy is all but a shoe-in for this first cut-off.  So the real story this Sunday is about the Royal / Bayrou battle.

FT interviewed Royal earlier in the election and asked her opinion about how to best face off against Bayrou. Here is the excerpt: FT: "Faced with the rise of François Bayrou in the polls, two opposing schools of thought have formed in the Socialist Party. Some advise you to move further to the left, others ask you to take the path of social democracy. What is your view?" Royal: "It is me who sets the line. I am myself, I see the reality of France as it is, I propose effective solutions by saying what needs to be said, without being enslaved by any dogma. But it’s a revolution that is difficult to accomplish: the French must accept that a woman can exercise power."
