Segolene Royal did well in the elections this past weekend. She secured second place, behind Sarkozy, and will now face off against him in a run-off election. Segolene Royal is a socialist candidate who in running on a workers platform. She wants to raise the minimum wage and protect Frech workers. French voters hit the polls, Sarkozy vs. Royal

Today is election day in France.  The interior ministry said turnout by noon was slightly over 34 percent, higher than in the first round of voting on April 22, when overall participation had reached close to record levels. In most overseas territories that voted early on Saturday, turnout was significantly higher than in the first round, the interior ministry said. In the last two surveys published by IPSOS and IFOP before a midnight ban, Mr Sarkozy, who heads the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), was credited with 30 and 28 per cent of Sunday's vote, followed by Ms Royal on 23 and 22.5 per cent. The other eight candidates were far behind.
