PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Having shed his Republican name tag but not his reputation as a successfully centrist U.S. senator, Lincoln Chafee hopes to join the handful of independent candidates nationwide who have gone on to a governor's chair. While many independent candidates struggle to get noticed, political analysts and former independent governors say Chafee — a multimillionaire and son of a former senator — is an exception with the name recognition, a fundraising network and a political resume to mount a serious run. "It's rare you'll find a candidate in a state who's well known and well financed," said Dean Lacy, a Dartmouth College ... Read Full Story

The former very liberal Republican Senator from Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee, has been one of my favorite politicians for a long time.  Though I also really like his Democratic replacement Sheldon Whitehouse as well, Senator Chafee has long been one of the only voices of genuine reason in his party.  In the following talk he gave before the New America Foundation , which was hosted by Steve Clemons who is a great commentator in his own right. Via The Washington Note (its just over an hour long, but worth it): One comment regarding a small point Lincoln Chafee makes in his observations about they ... Read Full Story

The Rhode Island Senate heard testimony on a bill (S-5496) which would criminalize indoor prostitution.   Among those who testified were employees of some of the brothels/spas who would be put out of business if the legislation is passed.  The women testified that they work there voluntarily, they're not coerced, and no one else is being coerced.  That would seem to pretty much kill the argument that the bill is in response to fears of human trafficking.       Since the state already has human trafficking laws on the books, then why is it attempting to criminalize activity that occurs behind closed doors between ...      Lincoln Chafee is planning his first fundraiser , and the guest list includes both Democrats and Republicans.  This isn't surprising, since the Chafee family was associated with the Republican Party for so long, and many of Lincoln Chafee's positions are similar to those of Democrats.  The list of backers include Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, former Secretary of State Susan Farmer, former city councilman Malcolm Farmer, and Anne Nolan from Crossroads.  One other backer is Democratic State Representative Chris Fierro, which didn't sit well with Democratic Party executive director Tim Grilo, who had this to say: "I wasn't surprised to see that Rep. Fierro ... Read Full Story
