So I tried to watch last week's game between Seattle and Chicago on NFL rewind, but I must admit that I got bored and fell asleep in the middle. I did still make a few observations that may be germane to this week's game. Seneca Wallace tends to overthrow his long passes. I predict at least 1 interception because of this. Wow... that was the definition of an ugly win. In fact, I will just come out and say it; the Bears did not deserve to win. Their defense, while it forced turnovers, was pretty miserable most of the game. They made Seneca Wallace look pro bowl like and Julius Jones shredded through tacklers like it was nothing. Seneca is way more mobile than Hasselbeck. If Seneca makes the correct reads about when to run and when to pass, he could easily tire out this Bears defense. Expect to see Knapp use this. Seahawks nine-time Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones will not return until at least November, if at all this season. Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday the team has decided Jones will back off trying to return from two knee surgeries. Lofa Tatupu has had multiple concussions. He's one of the first three active NFL players who have agreed to donate their brains for research after death. He's also been to three Pro Bowls in four pro seasons. Last year, he signed a $42 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks, with $18 million guaranteed.  

When Jim Mora climbed Mount Rainier this summer as though it were a neighborhood knoll, he stood on the rugged peak looking to scale even more mountain. He's got one now. His Seahawks are on a two-game losing streak and in danger of falling three games out of the NFC West lead just four weeks into the season.

Bears defensive players can find fault so far only with their inability to create turnovers. Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a somewhat harsher critic. During a conference call with Chicago reporters Wednesday, Houshmandzadeh promised he could beat Bears cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman "95 percent" of the time when the two teams meet Sunday at Qwest Field.  

Jim Mora made it a point to pull aside David Hawthorne as the Seattle Seahawks started preparations for Chicago this week. The message from the Seahawks head coach to his second-year linebacker: you have no choice but to be a leader. "He was basically just telling me to take charge of the defense," Hawthorne said.  

Just before listing injuries to 12 starters, a damning dozen that includes quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and is already putting the Seahawks' 2009 season in jeopardy, Jim Mora laughed. "OK, what I thought we could do is get the injury stuff out of the way, and then if we have any time left for questions we can get to that," Seattle's coach joked Wednesday.  

Any worries Matt Hasselbeck had about getting hit in his broken ribs ended quickly. Before kickoff. "Guys were giving me chest bumps pregame," Seattle's three-time Pro Bowl quarterback said, marveling over teammates who were excited he was back after being sidelined two games. Turns out quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's rib injury was not as serious as it looked on Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks have signed guard Mike Gibson onto their active roster off Philadelphia's practice squad as they continue to shuffle their battered offensive line. The Seahawks also announced Wednesday they had signed former fill-in starting tackle Kyle Williams to their practice squad. They had released him on Tuesday, two days after he started in a 27-3 loss to Arizona.  

In recent seasons, former coach Mike Holmgren turned grandfatherly during the Seahawks' bye weeks. Turning 60 and already owning a Super Bowl ring, he boldly gave his players the entire week off. They'd go on far-flung vacations or just relax and heal at home with family and friends. It was wildly popular, of course, like Spring Break in October.  

Seahawks star linebacker Lofa Tatupu may not be out for the season after all. Seattle coach Jim Mora said Monday that further tests on the three-time Pro Bowler's chest muscle indicated a partial tear rather than the complete one doctors told him Tatupu had the day before. "After further review and further imaging, we're not certain yet Lofa is done.  

The Seattle Seahawks have waived fill-in starting left tackle Kyle Williams. The move announced Tuesday suggests that Damion McIntosh knows enough of the offense to start in Seattle's next game on Nov. 1 at Dallas or that nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones will be ready to make his season debut then.  

Marcus Trufant squinted into the autumn fog drifting off the Seahawks' practice field. He flashed a sheepish grin. It was if he was a shy outcast, not a Seattle mainstay since his hometown team drafted him 11th overall in 2003. "I'm the new guy," the Pro Bowl cornerback from 2007 joked Tuesday, after his first practice since he injured his lower back in July.  

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Terreal Bierria has been arrested in the killing of a Louisiana man. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said Tuesday that Bierria, who played for Seattle in 2002 and 2004, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. Authorities say the victim was 29-year-old Soron Salter of Slidell.  

Kyle Williams was cut by Seattle for failing at left tackle, two days after Matt Hasselbeck got sacked five times in a dreadful 27-3 loss to Arizona. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck excels despite two broken ribs, thanks to painkillers shot directly into the fractures by an expert on precise injections the team had summoned to get Hasselbeck to play. The emergency left tackle is forced from the practice squad into the starting offense -- then plays the final two quarters with a sprained knee.  

Already dealing with key injuries, the Seattle Seahawks took another hit on Sunday, losing middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu for the season with a torn left pectoral muscle. Seattle coach Jim Mora announced Tatupu would miss the rest of the season and need surgery following Seattle's 27-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.  

Ken Lucas just played the toughest game of his nine-year career. The Seahawks' cornerback started Sunday's win over Jacksonville less than 48 hours after he found out his father Clyde had died. Seattle coach Jim Mora said Monday the team and Lucas learned of the unexpected death Friday night. The 30-year-old Lucas then decided to play.  

Matt Hasselbeck's painkilling injections not only saved the Seahawks' weekend, they may have saved their season. Seattle (2-3) is suddenly one game out of first place in the mild, mild NFC West, one week after Hasselbeck couldn't breathe without pain and the Seahawks were gasping on the verge of irrelevance.  

Seattle cornerback Ken Lucas did not return after he sustained a shoulder stinger in the third quarter of the Seahawks' game Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Lucas was hurt trying to bring down running back Felix Jones in Dallas' 38-17 victory. On the tackle, Jones pushed Lucas to the ground, and the ninth-year cornerback landed awkwardly.  

For someone who's never carried the ball in a regular season game, the Seattle Seahawks are sure enamored with running back Louis Rankin. To the point where the NFL's active rushing leader, Edgerrin James, was sent away earlier this week to see if Rankin could provide a missing jolt for Seattle's struggling run game.  

It's a chicken or egg quandary for the Seahawks. And the chicken, like almost everyone else in Seattle, is beat up. For the last two seasons, the Seahawks have convinced themselves that an epidemic of injuries is what has caused the former four-time defending NFC West champions to go 6-16 since the start of 2008, including 2-4 this season entering their bye.  

The Edgerrin James experiment in Seattle is over. The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James on Tuesday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August. James' release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a lackluster 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5.  

Seattle's fourth fallen star had his season end Thursday. A team spokesman said three-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu went on the injured reserve list while he was having surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle in Alabama. Tatupu traveled there to consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr.

Coach Jim Mora expects Trufant to play mainly in nickel defensive alignments on passing downs against the Cowboys.  

Jim Mora is crafting more messages than wins right now. The Seattle coach just released some veterans, including Edgerrin James, the NFL's active leading rusher. There is still a chance Walter Jones will play for the Seahawks this season, though that chance is dwindling. Coach Jim Mora said Monday upon Seattle's return from a bye week that the nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle is "iffy" to practice this week. The 35-year-old Jones is trying to return from two surgeries on his left knee since December.  

Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren swapped coaching techniques with three of England's top coaches Friday and offered some advice on how to handle high-priced stars. The former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks coach said the biggest challenge is to keep players focused on winning games rather than securing bigger contracts.  

The Seattle Seahawks have added defensive end Derek Walker to their active roster and released wide receiver Mike Hass. Walker made Seattle's opening day roster out of training camp, but was inactive in his only game this season on the active roster. He was released and signed to the practice squad on Sept.  

Seattle Seahawks running back Julius Jones left Sunday's game against Arizona early in the first quarter with a chest injury. Jones carried the ball twice for 10 yards. His departure left Justin Forsett as Seattle's primary back. It was not immediately known if he would return or not.

Matt Hasselbeck had a throbbing shoulder, to go with broken ribs. His Seahawks had even bigger issues. Faster than you can say "road kill," they were down 17-0 at home to the Lions. "It was like, 'You've got to be kidding me.' Seriously?"' Hasselbeck said, raising his voice as high as he then raised his game.  

The daughter of Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is recovering after surgery to repair injuries sustained on a family trip to Central Washington over the bye weekend. Hasselbeck posted on his Twitter site Tuesday he had the "worst bye week ever. 6 year old daughter got hit by a dirt bike." The 34-year-old father of three said he spent his weekend at the hospital.

Seahawks defensive back Roy Lewis says he is appealing a $5,000 fine from the league for a late hit. Lewis said Thursday he was docked for hitting Detroit's Derrick Williams out of bounds at the end of a kickoff return Sunday. He was penalized with a personal foul. Lewis says teammate Lance Laury was also fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit on the same play.  

Sean Locklear will start at left tackle for the Seahawks in Sunday's key divisional game at Arizona. Locklear has been out since he sustained a high right ankle sprain midway through the second game of the season, Sept. 20 at San Francisco. Seattle has gone through five left tackles this season. Six-time All-Pro Walter Jones was supposed to make it back from major knee surgery but didn't and...  

Arizona Cardinals starting linebackers Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor were inactive for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Both had back injuries. Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is inactive for his fourth straight game Sunday, against the Seattle Seahawks. Winfield has not played since Oct. 18 because of a foot injury. He was listed as doubtful on the injury report Friday. Benny Sapp started in his place. The Vikings were also without backup defensive tackle Fred Evans, who was ill for most of the week.
