His ribs aren't fully healed. He couldn't heave deep passes last week, and he often threw almost sidearm because his shoulder ached. Yet Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck says his health is "the best it's been" since he fractured ribs during a Sept. 20 game at San Francisco.

Matt Hasselbeck, Charlie Frye, Mike Teel, David Greene, and Seneca Wallace: All five of these players have been or still are quarterbacks for the Seattle Seahawks. Frye lasted one season and was not re-signed. Greene was a bust draft pick in 2005 and never made it with the Seahawks. Wallace is in the top three in terms of backup quarterbacks in the NFL and has great starting potential. Hasselbeck is the only quarterback in Seahawks history to...

The Seattle Seahawks have signed former University of Washington running back Louis Rankin to their practice squad, according to the team’s website. Rankin, who rushed for over 1,000 yards during his senior year at UW in 2007, has spent the past two seasons with the Oakland Raiders. The 6′1″, 205-pound tailback was on Oakland’s active roster for two games this season, acting as the team’s kick returner early on. Rankin was released prior to...

Though the Seahawks will have Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, and presumably Mike Teel on the roster at the quarterback position, it has been widely speculated that the team will use a high pick next year to grab a quarterback. The team has struggled in the last two seasons with Seneca Wallace under center in Hasselbeck’s extended absences, and a few weeks ago, I called for the team to sign Jeff Garcia to be the backup to Hasselbeck. But next...

Seneca Wallace could remember only his mistakes on Sunday: not connecting with open tight end John Carlson down the middle on numerous occasions, his careless interception deep after escaping his own end zone, and the fourth-down pass that fell to the turf, ending Seattle's hopes.

Fourth quarter And I will conclude my game blog following Brandon Frye's last failure to get more than a hand on defensive end Robert Mathis. Mathis came untouched, hit Seneca Wallace from behind and forced a fumble recovered by Raheem Brock. Defensive end Patrick Kerney suffered an injury to his groin, it was announced, and will not return. Third quarter Edgerrin James honored between the third and fourth quarter, a presentation on the...

Wow... that was the definition of an ugly win. In fact, I will just come out and say it; the Bears did not deserve to win. Their defense, while it forced turnovers, was pretty miserable most of the game. They made Seneca Wallace look pro bowl like and Julius Jones shredded through tacklers like it was nothing. But they won. And a win is a win, whether it is ugly or pretty and I will take it. So lets get to the grades:   OFFENSE Quarterback...

"It's extremely unlikely Matt will play," said Jim Mora. Am I alone in asking, "is this really that bad?" The Bears' defense is one of the most aggressive in the league. Seneca is way more mobile than Hasselbeck. If Seneca makes the correct reads about when to run and when to pass, he could easily tire out this Bears defense. Expect to see Knapp use this. I expect to see a lot of creativeness in this game. I believe Seneca will have a day...

The Edgerrin James experiment in Seattle is over. The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James on Tuesday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August. James' release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a lackluster 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5.

Sean Locklear will start at left tackle for the Seahawks in Sunday's key divisional game at Arizona. Locklear has been out since he sustained a high right ankle sprain midway through the second game of the season, Sept. 20 at San Francisco. Seattle has gone through five left tackles this season. Six-time All-Pro Walter Jones was supposed to make it back from major knee surgery but didn't and...

Jim Mora is crafting more messages than wins right now. The Seattle coach just released some veterans, including Edgerrin James, the NFL's active leading rusher. He promoted running back Louis Rankin, formerly released by the equally woeful Raiders, from the practice squad. The message is clear: those who aren't producing had better start doing so when the Seahawks host the one-win Detroit...

Just when the Seahawks were feeling good about one of their few positive Sundays this shaky season, Monday arrived. Seattle (3-5) rallied from 17-0 down at home Sunday, then needed Matt Hasselbeck's record-setting passing day to beat the lowly Detroit Lions. While that saved their season -- for now -- their first win in four weeks will mean nothing unless the Seahawks can now do things they...

Arizona Cardinals starting linebackers Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor were inactive for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Both had back injuries. Inside linebacker Hayes missed his second straight game, again replaced by Ali Highsmith. Bertrand Berry replaced Okeafor at outside linebacker.

Greg Knapp was having a San Francisco flashback. The former assistant to Steve Mariucci and George Seifert thought he was coaching another one of Steve Young's aerial circuses with the old 49ers. Seattle's first-year offensive coordinator was dutifully trying to follow last weekend's plan for the Seahawks to run the ball as much as throw it.
