ST. LOUIS – How low can the Seattle Seahawks’ running game go?

Well, right now, they are at an historical low for the organization. The Seahawks’ current average of 84.4 yards per contest ranks last in the league and would be a franchise-worst if the Seahawks finish there at season’s end. They would surpass the current record low of 87 yards a contest set in the 1989 season, when Seattle finished 7-9.

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Terreal Bierria has been arrested in the killing of a Louisiana man. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said Tuesday that Bierria, who played for Seattle in 2002 and 2004, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. Authorities say the victim was 29-year-old Soron Salter of Slidell.  

Greg Knapp was having a San Francisco flashback. The former assistant to Steve Mariucci and George Seifert thought he was coaching another one of Steve Young's aerial circuses with the old 49ers. Seattle's first-year offensive coordinator was dutifully trying to follow last weekend's plan for the Seahawks to run the ball as much as throw it.

Kurt Warner was back to throwing with MVP-like precision. Larry Fitzgerald was dominating again, catching everything near him. The defense was swarming, putting the Arizona Cardinals back to the top of the mild NFC West after early-season mediocrity. Already dealing with key injuries, the Seattle Seahawks took another hit on Sunday, losing middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu for the season with a torn left pectoral muscle. Seattle coach Jim Mora announced Tatupu would miss the rest of the season and need surgery following Seattle's 27-3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.  

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck excels despite two broken ribs, thanks to painkillers shot directly into the fractures by an expert on precise injections the team had summoned to get Hasselbeck to play. The emergency left tackle is forced from the practice squad into the starting offense -- then plays the final two quarters with a sprained knee.  

Ken Lucas just played the toughest game of his nine-year career. The Seahawks' cornerback started Sunday's win over Jacksonville less than 48 hours after he found out his father Clyde had died. Seattle coach Jim Mora said Monday the team and Lucas learned of the unexpected death Friday night. The 30-year-old Lucas then decided to play.  

Matt Hasselbeck's painkilling injections not only saved the Seahawks' weekend, they may have saved their season. Seattle (2-3) is suddenly one game out of first place in the mild, mild NFC West, one week after Hasselbeck couldn't breathe without pain and the Seahawks were gasping on the verge of irrelevance.

Nate Burleson has a high ankle sprain and may not play again this season for the Seahawks. Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday that Burleson is out for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Seahawks star linebacker Lofa Tatupu may not be out for the season after all. Seattle coach Jim Mora said Monday that further tests on the three-time Pro Bowler's chest muscle indicated a partial tear rather than the complete one doctors told him Tatupu had the day before. Seattle cornerback Ken Lucas did not return after he sustained a shoulder stinger in the third quarter of the Seahawks' game Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Lucas was hurt trying to bring down running back Felix Jones in Dallas' 38-17 victory. On the tackle, Jones pushed Lucas to the ground, and the ninth-year cornerback landed awkwardly.  

Marcus Trufant squinted into the autumn fog drifting off the Seahawks' practice field. He flashed a sheepish grin. It was if he was a shy outcast, not a Seattle mainstay since his hometown team drafted him 11th overall in 2003. "I'm the new guy," the Pro Bowl cornerback from 2007 joked Tuesday, after his first practice since he injured his lower back in July.  

The Seattle Seahawks have waived fill-in starting left tackle Kyle Williams. The move announced Tuesday suggests that Damion McIntosh knows enough of the offense to start in Seattle's next game on Nov. 1 at Dallas or that nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones will be ready to make his season debut then.  

Homecomings aren't what they used to be for Julius Jones. Last year he had Seattle's date against his former team circled and highlighted beginning seven months before the Seahawks played at Dallas. Marcus Trufant will make his season debut for the Seahawks on Sunday at Dallas. Seattle activated the 2007 Pro Bowl cornerback from the physically-unable-to-perform list Friday. Last week was the first time Trufant had practiced since July, when a disk issue in his back began. Coach Jim Mora expects Trufant to play mainly in nickel defensive alignments on passing downs against the Cowboys.  

Seattle's fourth fallen star had his season end Thursday. A team spokesman said three-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu went on the injured reserve list while he was having surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle in Alabama. Tatupu traveled there to consult with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr.  

Even though Walter Jones has gone on the Seahawks' injured reserve list, ending his season and perhaps his illustrious career, the six-time All-Pro left tackle wants to attempt a return in 2010. Instead of retiring, the 35-year-old Jones said Wednesday "I still want to play." He faces yet another long rehabilitation for his left knee, on which he's had two surgeries since he last...  

The daughter of Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is recovering after surgery to repair injuries sustained on a family trip to Central Washington over the bye weekend. Hasselbeck posted on his Twitter site Tuesday he had the "worst bye week ever. 6 year old daughter got hit by a dirt bike." The 34-year-old father of three said he spent his weekend at the hospital.  

Kyle Williams was cut by Seattle for failing at left tackle, two days after Matt Hasselbeck got sacked five times in a dreadful 27-3 loss to Arizona. Before that, Brandon Frye, Sean Locklear and star Walter Jones all were hurt playing the most important position on the offensive line. That makes Damion McIntosh Seattle's Plan E at left tackle.  

There is still a chance Walter Jones will play for the Seahawks this season, though that chance is dwindling. Coach Jim Mora said Monday upon Seattle's return from a bye week that the nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle is "iffy" to practice this week. The 35-year-old Jones is trying to return from two surgeries on his left knee since December.  

The Seattle Seahawks have signed guard Mike Gibson onto their active roster off Philadelphia's practice squad as they continue to shuffle their battered offensive line. The Seahawks also announced Wednesday they had signed former fill-in starting tackle Kyle Williams to their practice squad. They had released him on Tuesday, two days after he started in a 27-3 loss to Arizona.  

It's a chicken or egg quandary for the Seahawks. And the chicken, like almost everyone else in Seattle, is beat up. For the last two seasons, the Seahawks have convinced themselves that an epidemic of injuries is what has caused the former four-time defending NFC West champions to go 6-16 since the start of 2008, including 2-4 this season entering their bye.  

In recent seasons, former coach Mike Holmgren turned grandfatherly during the Seahawks' bye weeks. Turning 60 and already owning a Super Bowl ring, he boldly gave his players the entire week off. They'd go on far-flung vacations or just relax and heal at home with family and friends. It was wildly popular, of course, like Spring Break in October.  

Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren swapped coaching techniques with three of England's top coaches Friday and offered some advice on how to handle high-priced stars. The former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks coach said the biggest challenge is to keep players focused on winning games rather than securing bigger contracts.  

This season, Wednesday has become quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's routine day for rest. And he has almost as many aches as weeks in the season. The battered 34-year-old, three-time Pro Bowl passer sat out another practice with a sore throwing shoulder, but coach Jim Mora said Hasselbeck is probable to start for the Seahawks on Sunday at Houston.  

Safety Deon Grant said the Seahawks defense is finally playing the way he thought it would. "The defense that I promised a lot of people before the season started, we're finally getting it together," he said. "We've just got to keep on going and keep building off of that." The Seahawks braced for another rampage from Frank Gore. Instead, they got a career passing day from Alex Smith, the 49ers' new spread offense -- and a gift win. "It's a load off when they take care of one of our problems for us. It was ... beautiful," Seattle rookie outside linebacker Aaron Curry said, beaming that the same Gore who had romped over the Seahawks for 202 yards three...  

Seahawks defensive end Cory Redding is inactive for their game against San Francisco, while the 49ers are without wide receiver Isaac Bruce. Also inactive for the 49ers Sunday is starting right tackle Adam Snyder, out with a shoulder injury. He was listed as probable on the injury report Friday. Bruce was questionable with a knee injury.  

Mike Holmgren wants to talk to the Seahawks about coming back. Seattle's former coach and one-time general manager said Friday during his semi-weekly radio show in Seattle that he'd like to talk to Seahawks owner Paul Allen and chief executive officer Tod Leiweke about becoming the team's GM and perhaps president.  

Arizona Cardinals starting linebackers Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor were inactive for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Both had back injuries. Inside linebacker Hayes missed his second straight game, again replaced by Ali Highsmith. Bertrand Berry replaced Okeafor at outside linebacker.  

The Seahawks are essentially out of the playoffs -- again. They just shoved out Tim Ruskell, their president and general manager, weeks before his five-year contract was to expire. Yet Patrick Willis thinks Seattle (4-7) has some things to play for Sunday against San Francisco (5-6): Matt Hasselbeck's broken ribs.  

Seattle first-round pick Aaron Curry was injured late in the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The linebacker was injured trying to make a tackle and lay on the field for a few minutes before being helped to his feet and taken away on a cart. It was unclear what his injury was but he appeared to be holding one of his arms as he was carted away.  

When T.J. Houshmandzadeh made a free agent visit to Minnesota at the beginning of March, he was impressed by everything he saw. Well, almost everything. Owner Zygi Wilf cut short a vacation and presented a competitive offer. Receivers coach George Stewart made the veteran feel like the missing piece to the puzzle and coach Brad Childress made it clear how much they valued Houshmandzadeh's...  

Justin Forsett set career highs with 130 yards and two touchdowns and the go-ahead score came on the Seattle Seahawks' third defensive touchdown of the season in a 27-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Seattle (4-7) had been 0-5 on the road but ended the drought against the Rams (1-10), who have lost 11 in a row at home.  

Running back Steven Jackson is set to start the St. Louis Rams' game against the Seattle Seahawks after missing three days of practice with back spasms. Jackson entered with four straight 100-yard games and was cleared after participating in pre-game warmups. He had been questionable. Aaron Curry is about to get an unexpected breather from the Seahawks. He's had so many life changes since April, he probably could use it. The dynamic outside linebacker turned 23. He became the fourth overall draft choice. He got married and became a father. He sat out the first eight days of training camp, then signed for $34 million guaranteed -- the largest assured cash for a non-quarterback...  

Games aren't the only thing Jim Mora is losing. The Seahawks' coach just lost his workout buddy. He moved to Los Angeles. So the fiendishly fit Mora isn't sprinting up rugged Tiger Mountain near his suburban Seattle home for his renowned, pre-dawn runs much anymore. He's also losing sleep.  

When the Houston Texans host the Seattle Seahawks for the first time this weekend, they'll be meeting a group that looks very much like them. These teams enter Sunday's game with 5-7 records and similar disappointment at being all but out of the playoff hunt with four games to go. They each need a victory to extend their chance of finishing with a winning record, and they'll both have...  

The Seattle Seahawks have retired their neon-green jerseys after just one game. The Seahawks were widely panned for wearing the jerseys during a home loss to the Chicago Bears on Sept. 27. They haven't been seen since. Coach Jim Mora chooses the uniforms combinations the team wears each week, with input from the players.  

Of all the alarms going off while another Seahawks season crumbles, the one sounded by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck rings loudest. "We can't get used to this," the three-time Pro Bowl passer told reporters in Minneapolis immediately after Seattle sunk to 3-7 with a 35-9 loss to the Vikings.  

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is inactive for his fourth straight game Sunday, against the Seattle Seahawks. Winfield has not played since Oct. 18 because of a foot injury. He was listed as doubtful on the injury report Friday. Benny Sapp started in his place. The Vikings were also without backup defensive tackle Fred Evans, who was ill for most of the week.  

Josh Wilson is unlikely to play Sunday at Minnesota because of a concussion, leaving the Seahawks without a starting cornerback against Brett Favre and the high-flying Vikings. Seattle coach Jim Mora said after Wilson missed his third consecutive practice Friday that there is only a slight chance he will play.  

Matt Hasselbeck is goal-oriented. Right now, that leaves him and his Seahawks in an altered state. Seattle's captain and three-time Pro Bowl quarterback has stopped talking about the goals the team set this summer -- winning the NFC West for the fifth time in six seasons, or at least returning to the playoffs after a one-year absence.  

Adrian Peterson doesn't know much about "poison pills" in contracts. All the Vikings superstar running back knows is that six-time Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson is clearing holes for him. And that Hutchinson isn't doing anything for anybody anymore in Seattle. "If you could see me, I'm doing a dance right now, because we got him and you all don't," the NFC's...  

The Seattle Seahawks' two starting cornerbacks have been diagnosed with concussions. Marcus Trufant and Josh Wilson didn't practice Wednesday, and Seahawks coach Jim Mora didn't specifically address their playing status for Sunday's game against Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. "We'll have a couple guys that might be limited (in practice), but nothing serious,"...  

Put a game on the line with one swing of his leg, send 11 men charging after him, throw in some wind -- and Olindo Mare stays eerily unflappable. Not to mention accurate. Yet ask the accomplished 36-year-old kicker who is carrying a Seahawks record of 18 consecutive made field goals into Sunday's game at Houston about having to fight for his job this summer with an unproven kid?  

The Seahawks were once hallowed within the NFC West. A prolific, multidimensional offense was backed by a big-play defense and one of the league's loudest home-field advantages, helping Seattle win four consecutive division titles and reach the Super Bowl after the 2005 season. Now, Seattle is hollow.  

Frustrated over what's become a lost season for his Seahawks, Jim Mora used sarcasm to make a point he hopes gets heard throughout league headquarters. Protect my quarterback, too. Seattle's coach delivered an exaggerated message Monday: If referees aren't going to call it, then his defenders should be pressing their forearms into the throats of opposing quarterbacks.

Sean Locklear will start at left tackle for the Seahawks in Sunday's key divisional game at Arizona. Locklear has been out since he sustained a high right ankle sprain midway through the second game of the season, Sept. 20 at San Francisco. Seattle has gone through five left tackles this season. Six-time All-Pro Walter Jones was supposed to make it back from major knee surgery but didn't and...  

His ribs aren't fully healed. He couldn't throw deep passes last week, and he often threw almost sidearm because his shoulder ached. Yet Matt Hasselbeck says his health is "the best it's been" since he fractured ribs on Sept. 20 at San Francisco. "Way better than last week. Way better than it's been in the last five weeks, really," the Seahawks' three-time Pro...  

Seahawks defensive back Roy Lewis says he is appealing a $5,000 fine from the league for a late hit. Lewis said Thursday he was docked for hitting Detroit's Derrick Williams out of bounds at the end of a kickoff return Sunday. He was penalized with a personal foul. Lewis says teammate Lance Laury was also fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit on the same play.  

Matt Hasselbeck is back practicing with the Seahawks -- and tired of talking about his health. The 34-year-old three-time Pro Bowl quarterback practiced Thursday, after taking another Wednesday off to rest a sore throwing shoulder. He will start Sunday at Houston. The shoulder that had been paining him got worse last weekend on a tackle at the end of a scramble against San Francisco.  

The Seattle Seahawks have added defensive end Derek Walker to their active roster and released wide receiver Mike Hass. Walker made Seattle's opening day roster out of training camp, but was inactive in his only game this season on the active roster. He was released and signed to the practice squad on Sept.  

Just when the Seahawks were feeling good about one of their few positive Sundays this shaky season, Monday arrived. Seattle (3-5) rallied from 17-0 down at home Sunday, then needed Matt Hasselbeck's record-setting passing day to beat the lowly Detroit Lions. While that saved their season -- for now -- their first win in four weeks will mean nothing unless the Seahawks can now do things they...  

Matt Hasselbeck had a throbbing shoulder, to go with broken ribs. His Seahawks had even bigger issues. Faster than you can say "road kill," they were down 17-0 at home to the Lions. "It was like, 'You've got to be kidding me.' Seriously?"' Hasselbeck said, raising his voice as high as he then raised his game.  

Dynamic wide receiver Calvin Johnson is in the Detroit Lions' starting lineup for the first time in almost a month. Coach Jim Schwartz had said his "special" target would be a game-time decision Sunday against the Seahawks. He is active for the first time since he injured his right knee on Oct.  

For someone who's never carried the ball in a regular season game, the Seattle Seahawks are sure enamored with running back Louis Rankin. To the point where the NFL's active rushing leader, Edgerrin James, was sent away earlier this week to see if Rankin could provide a missing jolt for Seattle's struggling run game.  

Jim Mora is crafting more messages than wins right now. The Seattle coach just released some veterans, including Edgerrin James, the NFL's active leading rusher. He promoted running back Louis Rankin, formerly released by the equally woeful Raiders, from the practice squad. The message is clear: those who aren't producing had better start doing so when the Seahawks host the one-win Detroit...  

Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson put together their best game of the season to help the Houston Texans out of a slump and keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive. Johnson had a season-high 193 yards receiving and two touchdowns to lead the Texans (6-7) to a 34-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks (5-8) on Sunday to break a four-game losing streak.  

The Edgerrin James experiment in Seattle is over. The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James on Tuesday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August. James' release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a lackluster 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5.  

Jim Mora's optimism is ebbing. The Seahawks coach didn't have the same fiery emotion and frustration Monday as he did immediately after his team's most lopsided loss of the season, 34-7 at Houston on Sunday. Yet he had the same impression of the result. "I'm very discouraged right now.
